WHAT COIL IS BEST FOR FINDING OLD COINS ON THE X70

I WILL BE COIN HUNTING HERE IN OHIO AT SITES THAT HAVE ALOT OF OLDER SILVER COINS; WHAT WOULD BE THE BEST COIL TO USE ON THE X70; THANKS GARY

Hi Gary,

Not having used my X-Terra 70 for coin hunting, my guess might be the 3kHz concentric coil. The reason is that, according to the specs, it is best for high conductors. I have one specifically for that purpose, but I haven't had an opportunity to try it yet. I believe Digger is having good success with that coil. NH Bob is having great success with the 10.5" 7.5kHz DD coil as well. That's the coil that generally stays on my X-Terra 70 for relic hunting.

I would also think that most any of the coils for the X-Terra 70 would work well for silver coins. The X-Terra 70 seems like it's a great all-around unit for various hunting scenarios. What coil(s) do you have now? Have you tried them for the type of hunting you want to do? If so, what has been your results? If not, give them a try first would be my suggestion.

Hope this helps, and good hunting,
OldeTymer

I don't see much difference in any of the 9-incy concentric coils. And for the moderately mineralized soils around here, I don't benefit from the DD design characteristics. I like the 3 kHz concentric because I have convinced myself the iron tones are less predominate. Maybe it is just my hearing? Although the higher 18.75 kHz may be a bit more sensitive to smaller targets, it is a trade off when you have to lower the sensitivity on the X-70 to keep it stable. For all around detecting and coin shooting, the 7.5 kHz is an excellent coil. So, in my opinion, based simply on depth and separation characteristics, use the one you have. And when a smaller coil comes out, you might want to give it a try for better separation. HH Randy

I agree with the suggestion to use the one you have for now. It will do you well and give you time to adjust to the machine.
