What brand of battery do you use????

I didn't want to hi-jack the other thread about batteries by asking this question there. I have been using the plain jane Ray-o-vac in my G2 and I am not getting but about 3 to 4 to 5 hours of usage before the unit drops to a single bar on the battery-life meter. How about Energizer-Max???? Are they considered Heavy Duty, as the manual says not to use Heavy Duty? Please post the type battery that you prefer in your Gold Bug or Tek G2. Thanks. Kevin

These and I get over 8 hours on a charge per battery.

The following refers specifically to 9 volt rectangulars (since this is the GB/G2 forum):

Most modern electronic devices are designed around the low electrical resistance and high "horsepower-hours" delivery capacity of good quality alkalines. The reason the manufacturer specifies alkalines is to discourage the customer from installing cheap batteries and then running into problems which wind up costing the company a lot of money dealing with customer service problems through no fault of the company.

Regular zinc-carbons that used to be standard fare 30 years ago are dead meat as far as electronics manufacturers are concerned. Customers will generally do best to agree with the manufacturers' design engineers.

"Heavy duty" types? These are just an improved version of the zinc-carbon. If you can get them really cheap, the product may work okay with them, but not for nearly as long as with a good alkaline.

Cheapie alkalines? Some are pretty good and some probably aren't even alkalines. Caveat emptor.

Good quality well known name brand alkalines? These are what the manufacturer designed around. They're the mainstream battery.

NiCd? somewhere between obsolete and downright illegal due to their cadmium content. Their resistance is low but they won't deliver the horsepower for long.

NiMh? Their resistance is almost always low enough to work in a circuit designed for alkalines, but they'll go dead typically in 1/3 the time an alkaline would hang in there. The advantage of the NiMh is that you can recharge it: the alkaline you have to throw away.

I've seen 9 volt lithium primary batteries but they're too expensive for general metal detector use. Some are designed to work in high-drain applications (okay for metal detectors), and others are designed for standby service (think smoke detectors) and their electrical resistance is too high to power a metal detector.

Thanks Dave for all that you do!

Nope, using a standard 9v charger here that I got from Radio Shack.

Ok, looking around I have seen nihi batteries to 300 mha but the price for them is way beyond a savings. I did find lipo's with 600 mha but that was prices at $66 for 2 though they might be a great savings..Though I am not yet sure I want to invest in bleeding edge tech on lipo's just yet. The chance of fire is just too great for me...
I can find a charger for roughly $10, and buy 280's for about $4-5 each...

Thats what I did, paid for 2 batts, came to just over $10.00 for them both, and $2.99 for the charger as it was on sale at RS.
