What are the Odds?

I was wondering what the odds were of my ever finding a gold coin? Are they easy to find?

Not many being found as you will see most never lost any gold coins. They either didnt have any to lose or never carried them. Gold coins were all called in back in the 20s as it was illeagle to have gold back then, so not many been lost plus those that have been lost read many times as trash, so if you dont dig trash you may go over one and miss it.
You will see a few finding gold coins, but very few are being found. I would say the odds are about over 100,000 to 1 in finding a gold coin, but it has been done so it is not impossible, just seems that way.

Gold coins were not lost by the 10s of 1000s as other coins were (just as someone else posted below said).
I believe all detectorist dream of finding a gold coin (at least the ones I know do) but, the sad reality is, only a very small % of people have or ever will find a gold coin. I've been looking/detecting for 20+ yrs and haven't found one yet!
TIP:
Your best possibility for finding one is at major Train Stations built in the 1800s when the city/etc. tears up the road/tracks/sidewalks, etc. around them (yet) even more so when it's never been done before because, that's where 100s of 1000s of people boarded/un-boarded trains carrying gold coin (especially) drunken lumber-jacks, as, that is how a lot of them where paid (in gold coin).
Old Brothels from that era are another good place to search!
Good luck!

I heard there was a Dahlonega gold coin found in Wisconsin, not too long ago. Has anybody heard anything about that?

It would seem to me that more should be found. If a guy ever lost a gold coin and a pennie at the same time you would get a good signal and find the gold in the same hole.

Now you remind me of a friend who knew someone who got a gold coin because there was an Indian Head in the same hole. He said he probably would not of gotten it otherwise.

they were recalled back in the early '30s, so you'd need a site at least that old. And many places have been relandscaped with fill dirt, so many gold coins may be too deep to detect. And the US was making paper money before they stopped making gold coins.
Also, many would have them discriminated out or they would ID wrong due metal next to them.
Many areas were not used by people wealthy enough to have gold coins as even a $1 piece was several hours wages for many. And if they had one & lost it, they probably looked for them at least if they knew they lost it & about where.
Most would not have been carrying gold coins unless they were going someplace to spend them. So old downtowns would be a place to look when they tear up the streets or sidewalks in front of business buildings.
Also, many still lived on farms & if they didn't trust banks, or none were near them, they would keep the gold coins at home, & any they weren't planning to spend soon were probably hidden.
Another place to try is parks in vacation areas or resorts that attracted the wealthy. Some would not like to spend significant time looking for even a gold coin due to limited vacation time & the high cost of vacations. HH, George (MN)

Forget fill sites, go where they take the top layer off. Notice the mint mark!

I have found one gold coin, a 1911 2-1/2 dollar gold piece, in 33 years of detecting. It had washed up on a beach in California and had a hole in it to boot ...Thatis what kind of odds you have..
