what are the major differences between a 705 and a X-Terra 70

I was wondering what the primary differences are between a X-Terra 70 and the newer model 705? I bought my mom a X-Terra 70 about three years ago and now that she has grown comfortable with it I am wondering if it is worth considering the newer model. She has the 5x10 18.5, the 6" 18.5; the 9" 10.5 and the 10" 18.5 DD. The 705 seems to use all of these coils from what I can tell but I was wondering what the members here thought of the two systems.

I believe the 70 and 705 are identical detectors. Only the name was changed.

The 705 has:

Tracking ground balance offset,
four patterns (70 has three),
pinpoint sizing,
a backlight,
slightly faster processor.

(Did I miss anything??)

I didn't understand the reason they felt compelled to add another Pattern, as they are so easy to change. And I've only used the backlight on a couple of occassions when I wandered so far from the truck that it got dark on me. But in my opinion, with those two pieces of functionality aside, Tracking GB offset, faster processor and Pinpoint Sizing make the 705 and "upgrade" from the X-70. JMHO HH Randy

Something worth considering. I suspect that Minelab will update the 705 in about 9 months. They seem to update every 3 years and that will occur around April next year (so long as they don't have any glitches that would delay releasing it). They seem to do the same thing to the Explore/E-Trac. If I'm right, we'll see a new E-Trac model in September this year.

The older 70 has words (sens, threshold etc) in the menu function and is easy to use

The newer 705 has symbols which can be a little harder to use
Minelab tried something new with this but IMHO it failed

I think ,, Southwind ,, could be right look at the Quattro and safari i used both and could not find any difference in the two …. Except for how they marked the buttons on the Safari to make them harder to understand what they were for..
