What and what not to dig?

I read that everyone says dig "everything" , it was easy to distinguish what to dig and not to dig with the Ace. But with the CTX it is a different story. I have been picking and choosing what I have been digging and seems like I haven't dug much trash. Mostly bottle caps and pull tabs 11.36 and 12.42 are the numbers. What are the numbers you guys try and avoid. I notice 11.38 is giving me a lot of clad dimes. What do you guys think?

I dig anything that is deep and gives a repeatable signal. Other than that usually 12.33 and up. Plus the usual nickel numbers.

Now how deep is deep? also wont you miss alot of coins? I noticed when I would dig below 12.42 it was trash.

I have found that 5 inches is the magic start point. BUT, my hunting partner and I have found silver
and Wheaties at 3 and 4 inches. Dig all 12/42 and 12/44 targets no matter what depth. With that being
said, experience will dictate what you should or should'nt dig.

There really is no set depth. Depends on where you are at. In the woods old coins can be surface to 12 inches plus. Most parks they are 4 inches or deeper typically but not always.

I am getting a lot of the older Merc and Barber dimes at 12/41. I had a target a 4 inches that came up at 12/44 in a park right beside the road so I was thinking clad quarter so I dug it and it was a 1862 seated quarter. Also get a lot of wheat at 12/36 - 12/39 and the Indians or coming in at 12/34 - 12/36 I am hitting nickel at 12/13. I got a gold ring that came up at 12/39. :twodetecting::minelab::beers:

Now when your digging these signals how often do you dig trash? I feel I might be passing on a lot of these numbers waiting for the 12.41-46. I think I will have to try and dig more coins. I have been trying to stay true to the coin chart in classroom. When I dug my barber on Friday it hit at 12.44 at 3 inches in the woods. I am prety sure I missed some great coins in the last few days skipping over the other numbers.

Rocco if your in an older area I really would dig them all. You never know what might show up! Don't be so concerned about #'s. good repeatable audio? Dig it!

Bart has good advice.

While the CTX TID is pretty much spot on, if I'm in an area, especially the woods and I get good audio but jumpy numbers I still dig it. You might dig a little more iron doing that but, ya never know.

I usually dig all stable targets. By stable I mean they have good repeatable tone in all directions, TID isn't fluctuating too bad and also I use the target trace to confirm multiple targets and or iron nect to targets. As for depth I try to dig them all. Just yesterday at dusk I got a good double hitting 12:43 reading in a dirt covered backyard. I looked down and saw a coin that I thought was a penny. Upon closer inspection I noticed... "hey.. This is too small to be a penny" It was a tarnished 43 merc just baking in the sun! Aside from nickels coins are reading 12:30 and up.

Good, repeatable signals from one direction, and from 90-degrees. You will not find gold if you do not dig pull tabs. I find more keepers in "hunted out" areas by digging the trash, especially deep trash. For example, I have pulled CW bullets and various tokens (all read from about 12-25 to 12-34, the "junk" range) from a local park, but also ended up with a ton of pull tabs. Ifyou have a good recovery speed and digging method, then you should be spending about 25 seconds on a target anyway. Well worth the investment.

Oh, and all those pull tabs can go in the recycling to make a little extra $$$$. My pals and I currently have a contest to see who can get the most.

All the guys have made great points. Now it's really up to you. Now go have some fun.

If you haven't been to the CTX 3030 Classroom Forum, you might take a look there. There is a lot of good information there, as well as here. Here is a link to a TID chart of US coins that is on that forum......HH

For me it depends on how much time I have and what types of targets the area is yielding. If I get hammered by a bunch of trash, I get much more selective about what I dig.

Porschephile, what modes do you run mostly when your in a hurry?

I run GH's combined mode open screen to start. If junk signals start to fatigue me, I will switch to ronfin's high trash program...
