What am I?

Looks like a button to me! Don't know what the star represents, and the button looks a bit like something you'd use in unholstery, with the long metal tags behind it. Just my guess!:)

It came out of the Wilderness battlefield with 5 bullets, a iron buckle, a cartridge box stud, and some buckshot. In less then 2 hours.

Without anything to give size relationship, I'm going to say the construction appears to be button decoration from a chin strap. However, I would say much later than the Civil War. This would be for a cuff size button. All CW chin strap buttons I have seen on kepi's were attached via the standard button shank (eyelet). Larger, coat size buttons of this device brings to mind the Western Concho belt decoration. I do not recognize the button as CW, but maybe someone can give us some factual evidence. Sounds like some good finds were made. Keep us posted on what you find out Bill. Good hunting, David@Dixie

David,
Your right it is kepi size and my thoughts were that of a kepi button too. I have the same type of button on my re-pop kepi but its a fed eagle button with iron wires not brass. 5 bullets, a iron buckle, a cartridge box stud, and some bucksot came from the Wilderness friday.

Just trying to be helpful here.

The two long thin flat brass ...ummm ..."prongs" on the back very strongly indicate this emblem was made to be mounted on thick leather - perhaps a saddle, a saddlebag, or horse-tack. You put the two long "prongs" through a small hole in the thick leather and spread them, thereby firmly affixing the ornament/decoration to the leather. This form of attaching ornamentation to thick leaher is still in use today. I don't know SPECIFICALLY what this relic is ...just that it looks manufactured to be mounted on a thick (or multi-layered) leather item ...such as some type of horse-gear.

side buttons on the helmets for state militias or the Mexican army. I have seen that one before. The fasteners do not look strong enough for horse harness's, so I'd probably steer away from those ideas.
