What am I missing? (prosecting mode)

Hey guys, I thought I would ask some of you folks something I can't seem to figure out. When I'm looking for gold, I always use the Relic mode and set the gain as high as it will let me,(usually all the way up), and the disc at 2. Doing this allows me to get the high pitched chirp on non-ferrous stuff(gold), and usually get a grunt on iron junk.... It seems just as sensitive as prospecting mode yet gives me a louder signal on gold than if I were using prospecting mode, therefore it seems I am less likely to pass by gold mistaking it for ground noise... But since the prospect mode is designed for gold, I assume there is something I am missing here.... By the way I use the 4x6 DD coil most of the time right now. For those of you that use the MXT for gold, I'm curious about your thoughts. Thanks, Matt

That's your problem, you need to put it in the prospecting mode and use the 6 X 10 DD. Go to your owners guide on page 30 Prospecting mode and read it. You will get the same grunt on ferrous metal as you do in the relic mode but with the prospecting mode the MXT will track the ground better, and the 4 X 6 is a good coil for trashy areas but not for mineralized ground. Also watch the video that came with the MXT Jimmy Sierra will walk you through the prospecting mode. If you don't have the video you can watch it on Whites home page.

I would try and pm steve herschbach or look up his post.He is a gold hunter in Alaska and uses the mxt and variety of machine.

Hillbilly Bob Is correct Matt,
I use a MXT here In Australia and the coil Bob suggested I use 99 percent of time In prospecting Mode the learning curve Is not to bad get a test nugget if you can and practice on the field real time, play with the hyper-sat don't be afraid to push the gain In to the plus range, if it acts up just back it down.

The MXT is 1 Very fine VLF detector On gold check out BT find his posts he is the MXT Guru In my opinion not to mention a great bloke BTW BT uses the small 5.3 Eclipse In certain circumstances have a look on here what hes found. Also go real slow I mean Grandpa slow swings and keep the coil on the ground skid plates are cheaper than what you might miss.

Prospecting Mode is an All Metal Pin Point with an Active Auto Tune Assist, or SAT.

All Metal Mode is a separate SINGLE channel and by-passes the MOTION FILTERS used by the Discrimination Mode, you can hear a target about 30% deeper and smaller. Rob

Matt, I couldn't resist. :)

I generally suggest using the Prospecting mode with the MXT. There have been times, however, when I have personally nugget hunted in the Relic mode with the Disc. at minimum and the trigger locked forward to achieve a better response to some gold nuggets. That is, in a few locations where I've compared both modes and set-ups, the Relic mode actually was 'quieter' in operation over some really goofy ground and the audio 'hit' on gold was better. I've demonstrated the zero discrimination setting on the M6, as well, when showing the difference in performance between it and a Minelab X-Terra 50 and 70. The M6 actually sounded better to most who were curious, as did the audio with the MXT.

Let me add this, too, about coil selection and presentation. I never scrub the ground with a coil as even the manufacturers suggest working the search coil a bit off the ground. Also, if I was to go hunt a large open area today where I anticipated gold NUGGETS I might opt for the 10" DD for coverage and ground handling. But at most sites I've hunted the nuggets tend to be smaller. The largest I have ever detected were a 5 dwt and 8 dwt in California. Most nugget sites I work, which isn't all that often anymore, produce smaller nuggets and my favorite coil on the MXT (or M6) from White's has been the 5.3 Eclipse.

There is no one perfect answer because sites vary, nugget size varies, and some people just have a bit of difficulty learning how to listen to and/or tolerate searching in the All Metal Prospecting mode.

I appreciate all the input guys. With my 4x6 coil I still seem to get better sensitivity in relic mode, but you guy have more experience than I do, so I will keep tinkering around and try to learn more about prospect mode. Also the 6x10 DD is next on my list of goodies, I've only heard good things about it. Thanks

Thanks for the wrap Buck but I'm definitely no Guru. Just as big a dingus as the next person in reality, not that I'm calling anyone a Dingus here:lol:.
I would say that the real Guru is the collective knowledge that can be found on this site by all who contribute to it. Iv learnt plenty from here myself.
