What am I missing about the way iron mask operates in prospecting mode??

To hear an audio response on small iron/nails it has to be set to 0. Admittedly I have not tried it in the field to see how it actually performs but it seems ass-backwards to me that a setting of 5 would eliminate the response on smaller iron. Is it not easier for a disc circuit to differentiate large iron from small gold than small iron from gold???

Thought I would pass on the info given to me by Andy regarding the IM in prospecting mode since no one added to the post.

Iron Mask in Prospecting Mode is simply a ferrous discrimination circuit which allows you to select the amount of iron rejection needed. Higher numbers will reject more (larger) iron but at the same time you risk losing more and more non-ferrous (gold) targets the higher the setting used. Set at 20 some iron will still be accepted. The manual should caution users that it should used only in areas that would be otherwise unhuntable due to the large amounts of iron left by the old timers.
