What am I doing wrong(also posted in the GT forum)

I have only had the GT for a short while took it to the beach Disc mode, disc and notch set at min, sens at about 12 o'clock, no problems other than the small waves made the threshold change?. Took it to a park today and could not get a constant threshold did what the manual says and put it in all metal and switched to track raising and lowering the coil med pitch in the air to high as the coil approached the ground? I'm not sure but is the threshold supposed to change pitch as the coil approaches the ground, and should it be jumping around while wading?

Salt water running (moving) underneath your coil can cause false readings because your detector is trying to read it. Cut back on the sensitivity and it should mellow out.

Now away from the beach.... The first thing I'd check is the coil cover if you have one. You may have brought some of the beach water and sand inland with you between your coil cover and coil. That may be what is playing with your thresh hold.

Good luck,

therick

I'll give it a shot as soon as this weather gives me a break, thanks

Sand and water gets into your cover and will cause falsing. I have the Excal which is the waterproof version of the GT. Your machine is multifrequency and will switch frequencys as it senses different conditons. You also have to be aware of your surroundings......these machines are very susceptable to radio frequency and electrical interfernces. Even sometimes the cell phone activity in the area might bother the machine. We went to a beach once that had radio transmitting towers across the bay.......our machines were totally useless because of the interference!

One trick I learned with the Sov a long time ago when hunting in Atlantic City (loads of electrical interference due to the Casino's close proximity to the beach) was that when hunting with the Disc and Notch at minimum I had a lot of problems with the electrical interference. But if I raised the Disc up a bit I could get rid of most of the interference and hunt without any problems. The Disc level required to do this was still below the Foil setting so it wasn't necessary to raise it high enough to lose the gold or the nickels. This method also works well if you are hunting in the vicinity of High Voltage Towers which unfortunately run through some old farm fields in this area and which also play havoc with a Sov. It's something else to try when hunting areas with a lot of electrical interference. With the GT I can usually get rid of the interference by changing the frequency.

I posted something to try with regards to interference below Bobbie's Post.

Regarding the wading are you hunting in All Metal or Disc when on the Saltwater Beach? If you are in All Metal the threshold changes in the water are normal. If you are hunting in Discrimination Mode is should be very stable unless as was mentioned there is sand and saltwater in your coil cover. I don't use a coil cover when hunting the beaches for the very reasons that you mentioned. The GT is a great beach machine even wading in the surf and in Discrminate mode is rock solid while still being able to get the gold!!!!! It has become my favorite choice for the beach.

Thanks everyone I'm going to lose the coil cover at the beach and see if that works. I was in Disc mode at the beach Disc and notch at Min, Sens at around 11 or 12. I have been able to find clad so far still need a lot of work on pinpoint and tones as those modern pulltabs sure sound like a coin yet!! I'm having a great time though, as figuring out what I'm doing is half the fun of owning something new. I have been having my wife tape a nickel to a piece of cardboard and flip it over then I try to tell her where it is taped, it seems to be working as I can get almost right on top of it the last few times.
