What a week!!!!!

This has been one long week here in my part of the world. With over a million homes losing power this past week, it has been a long week for many of us. The temps had been in the high 20's F when the rain started Monday afternoon. Since the ground temperatures were below the freezing mark, the rain froze on impact. Roads became slick, utility lines became heavy and trees started to sag. Although I started to lose a few small limbs from my 120 year old white pines, I wasn't prepared for the devastation that would soon follow. Around 3:45 on Tuesday morning, I was awaken by a huge thump! I looked out the window and saw my power line and other utility lines laying across the road, on the ground. Being concerned that a truck would coming by, snagging them and causing further damage, I went outside to see if I could at least get them off the street. As I went out the door, all I could hear was loud cracking of breaking trees and the popping sound of power transformers being shorted out by downed wires. As I walked past where the power lines had been attached to the the house, I could see the gapping hole in my roof where the mast had once stood. There was nothing to do but get back in the safety of my house and wait it out. The next several hours were filled with the sounds of more trees breaking, sirens blaring and total darkness. As daylight arrived, I was able to look out the window and view the damage. I was shocked by what I saw.

On Tuesday afternoon, a local electrician came to replace the power entrance to my house. The mast was replaced and the hole was repaired in my roof. Later that evening, the power company came and reconnected my electricity. On Wednesday, tree crews arrived to remove the bigger limbs from my roof and trim others that they thought might fall and cause further damage to the house or utility lines. But they apparently missed a couple! Thursday morning, about 2:30, we were once again startled by that (all too familiar) loud thump! Additional falling tree limbs had taken down the new power entrance. And once again they left a gapping hole in my roof. When daylight finally arrived, I once again secured the lines and made temporary repairs to my roof. The tree crew showed up Thursday afternoon to remove the new limbs from my roof. But were unable to get the truck close enough to the trees to cut them down.

And that is where we are right now....... We are all safe and I do have electricity. At least for the time being. It is now just a matter of waiting for the ice to melt enough so the trucks can get into my yard to remove the trees. After the trees are removed, I will have the power entrance replaced (again) and power restored on a permanent basis. As well, the phones and cable can be reinstalled on a permanent basis at that time. Until then, we just have to make the most of a difficult situation. What difficult situation, you ask? Working with my Insurance company, of course!

On a final note, as I was heading back to the house yesterday afternoon, I looked upward and saw something that made me realize..... everything will work out all right.

glad to hear your ok, sounds like a total mess, is the snow storm heading your way? sounds like your area could use a break, take care, thompy

Glad you made it through alive, pray that you can get back to normal as soon as possible. We had ice over here also, but after last years ice storm, we had all the trees and limbs that hung over the house taken down this summer. It does look like most of the outages were in your part of the state. Nature has a cruel way of trimming trees.
And you are right, everything will work out alright.

We know how you feel. About 10 years ago, we went through the same type of ice storm. It looked like a war zone and you did not walk or drive near any trees. Our house sits about 100' from any trees due to fire protection in the summer and our utilities are all buried under ground from the main power poles. It will take time to get all of the mess cleaned up. Some people who live way out of town were without power for a month.

Well, this is Friday the 14th and we here in Indiana are about to get dumpped on with a new batch of snow.
I wish it would all go away. Getting really sick of it all but I know we all really ned the snow to raise water levels.
Guess we all have to live with trade off's.

Looks like you guys got clobbered. That really bites that some old trees and your house got damaged. I was without power about 10 years ago for 4 days, same thing, a bad ice storm. I'll never forget the sound the pine trees made when they lost a big limb, sounded like an explosion and it was one after another. The white birch trees bent but didn't break and many of them are still bent to this day.

Glad you and the family made it through okay and got the power restored. We got an ice storm coming Sunday...I hope it doesn't knock out the power during the Patriots game! Ron

Nice seeing you back on randy. I got hit to. And another one is on its way . Get ready  talk to you soon Ed

Hope things improve for you, especially with Christmas so close.Wish we could help.Brilliant photos especially the last one. Best wishes to all.

Sounds like the temps are going to be cold enough now that the moisture will just be snow. They are calling for 4 to 5 inches tonight. But honeslty, that will make it easier to get around on the ice! To you folks in the NE, take care this weekend. It sounds like you are in for quite a storm. HH Randy

Good luck with the recovery Randy. I saw those storms on the Sydney news a couple of days back. You guys certainly got hammered. I hope it doesn't get too wearing on you. I've been though a few bush fires and caught in the car in a severe storm in which the car was constantly struck with flying debris, so I can appreciate what nature can throw at you sometimes. Sure is a powerful force. It's situations like this that will show you which are the better insurance companies, and which are the companies to be avoided in the future.
All the best,
Mick Evans.

The Oregon coast had winds of 100 mph gusts and rain in the coast range of 12". We had 4" of rain in the valley! and winter is just starting!
Glad to you and yours are ok!
Keith

Clear up to my #*@^&* and still snowing! 7 inches so far, on top of the ice from earlier in the week! The good news is that this storm is producing snow and not ice. And so far, my power is still on!

P.S. I'm suffering from winter detecting withdrawal syndrome. If any of you are able to get out there and hunt, could you please find a few old coins and post them up here for me? Thanks. HH Randy
