wetsuit question(New England weather)

How far into the season will i be able to use a jet ski type wetsuit in New England before it gets to cold? what mil size is good? should i have more than one summer/winter?
I have an opportunity to get one allmost new for $75 short, full, jacket and gloves but its the jet ski, wind surf. type does it matter?

I think I'm hooked on water hunting.

Thanks, Epi

Yes!! You'll need more than one and the thickness depends on the water and air temperature when you are going to hunt. I'd say go to a local dive shop and tell them what you plan to do. Ask for their guidance and ask them if they have any used suits. Suits depreciate like crazy and a wet suit is pretty hard to damage without the damage being visible. The most important part is the fit of the suit to your body. Too tight and it'll be a PIA to move about. Too loose and their will be so much air space inside that it can't keep you warm. Metal detecting is not as active as skiing, nor is diving...usually. Gotta consider how much energy your body is going to generate doing what you are doing. Shoveling snow is a lot more energy producing than wading in the water and digging an occasional scoop of sand.
I live in Washington State. The ocean water is terribly cold year around. The jet ski type shorty suits are fine for the lakes around here in the summer, jet skiing. Probably OK for 3-4 months wading, not diving, and are a waste during the Fall-Winter-Spring. So..are you going to use it in the Ocean or a lake? $75 is no great deal on a shorty ski suit. Check with some of the outfits on line and tell them what you are going to do. Call Discount Divers and just talk to the people there about what they'd recommend. You'll learn a lot and they are friendly helpful folks You can be fit by taking measurements and giving them to a shop. However, were it me, I'd find a local dive shop where you can go in and try them on.
Consider the new hyper stretch material. It' a little more expensive but it's no fun moving about in a suit that's stiff and doesn't fit. If it's not a good fit to you, it will sit in the closet and you won't be in the water much. jim

My advice, you may want to go drysuit as a backup from watching the forums over the years, lots of history in the New England area..and some of the hunters are digging great stuff year round..special when the NE'er come thur..........A few would be Craig {Cfmct PI}, PI Joe, Lorraine, then Capojo on our own forum here {Pm him, Great Guy, always willing to help}, I live about 800+ miles south of you and I have 2 drysuits to cover the winter months, one heavy and very lite with no insulation....when the water gets cold, no better way to stay warm, in and out of the water..is to be dry....Good Luck on your choice.......joe
