Wet sanding with the Excal...

Craig-PI

New member
Today was a nasty day outside, I decided to hit the wet sand this afternoon after the winds subsided a bit and there were alot of targets... must have been moved around by the strong NE winds we had all day...

Got a couple silver rings and 1 junker that is silver plated... I thought I had a gold ring until I dipped the scoop on the waters edge and saw the gold plated basketball pin lots of change and lots of pulltabs and beavertails...

Question time... on average how long does the alkaline battery pod last? I'm not using the rechargeable as I prefer the Alkaline over it and will save the rechargeable as a backup.

Not too trashy, ya looter! Hey Craig, I would not recommend you regularly use the alkaline pack, because the Excal sucks the AAs down quickly. It's a battery hog! I can barely finish a 6-8 hour hunt on fresh AAs, before I get the death squeal. I charge the nicad for at least 24 hours before I am going to hunt and it holds fine the whole hunt, without a failure. I have a bad one right now though, so I am running my back-up nicad and will send the bad one in with the unit next time for warranty work and get another new one. Minelab's warranty is a wonderful thing! It's saved me a TON and great service too! Fixed it right every time in! GH

Thx GH :)

When Batteries Plus was going out of business in my town last fall I purchased 24 count boxes of Duracell ProCell AA's for $3.25 a box, needless to say I bought a ton of them so I'm not really worried about using them up :) Put it to you this way... I have so many batteries I was giving my hunting buddies boxes of them :) They are good til 2011.

I was out yesterday, and it was nasty damp and raw........didn't get much because I hunted a cottage type beach. Your rechargeable has to be freshly charged within 24 hours of use as it looses the charge rapidly when not in use. You will also get about 6-8 hours on the rechargeable........12 is a little far fetched to me but I think it depends on the machine. You might want to try the new Oxyride batteries by Panasonic......they are claiming longer life. I too have a sour battery like GH and have just sent it back and they will replace it. Minelab people are good.

I found a company that makes a NiMH replacement for the NiCAD that is specifically for the Excal. The next battery pod that goes sour, I will just replace the insides of it. The J-man has an old SunRay NiMH rechargeable that he got with his used Excal and that sucker lasts about 25 hours on a charge with no memory!.......unfortunately SunRay no longer makes that battery pack.

Steve, I have the PI mentality... Dig it all :) I like it that way and I'm doing my part to keep our beaches cleaner.. :) One of my rings I found was a broken signal if I didn't take a chance and dig it... I would have found one less ring :) I do enjoy the Excal nulling out the iron though :)

When I got my Excal. 9 months ago I bought an extra rechargeable battery pod. I charge mine for 12 hrs (never have a heating problem) and I get 9 to 10 hrs. before the death squeal. It may have dropped off a little from when they were new. I usually hunt 3 to 4 hrs. at a time, and track my time on the battery so I know when to expect it to die. So far so good never with out power. As the batteries get older I may have problems. When I first got my Excal. I charged the batteries for 24 hrs. ( for the first time) like it says to do , and they got very hot, but I don't like overheating batteries while charging so 12 hrs. works for me. HH.

I charge my nicad for 12 to 14hrs only and it lasts for 12 hours of detecting time, the AA pod I bought from Kevin Reillys(Shameless plug!) lasts for a lot longer probably 16+hours. You have to fully discharge the nicad before charging it up that way the nicad has a long memory and will hold a longer charge.

Jim... I'm sitting here looking at that carabiner I have to send you :) I'll get it out to you soon lol...

I just put that replacement pack in my excal may buy another for the other excal. Dan
