wet sand woes

I took my Ace to the beach the other day to do some sweeping when the tide was out. I didn't seem to have any trouble finding pull tabs, bottle caps and foil etc, (not to mention, a hefty 26 cents) but the depth always indicated max. Is that normal for wet sand? Does anyone have any advice to deal with wet sand?
Btw, dug up a crushed pop can over a foot deep!

Wet sand with the ACE? Reduce the SENS a little and pay no attention to the depth indicator. At the beach, digging is the key.

In fact, I would put only minimal trust in the depth reading any time.
