Wet Sand Setting on Excalibur

I have been running my Excal 1000 between 11 and 12 on the dry sand and at 11 in the surf. I just read the manual again and I noticed that it says "When detecting at the beach, set the Sensitivity to the

Thanks for the reply. It was as I expected...

(Just to clarify ...I meant 11:00 to 12:00 position... )

I set my sensitivity where the machine will maintain a good threshold. Auto may work on some machines but not the Excall. Disc. on 1 or 2. Where you are hunting really makes a difference so adjust the sensitivity a little at a time. HH :minelab:

Running in auto will sacrifice depth. I no longer have the Excal , but I have the Sovereign. There are some places where a constant adjustment is needed. It is easier to put it in auto and let the detector do the work. The thing you need to watch for is running your detector too hot. Headlights in the fog. If you are experienced with your detector and can recognize unstable chatter then you will be fine. Personally I back mine down to eliminate wave and sand touching falsing. I usually end up around 12 or 1 o'clock. But coil size and location will dictate different settings.

Lots of great advice. Ill add mine! The single worse think a hunter can do any machine is set the sensitivity too high! With multi frequency detectors this is a big no no! I run where the detectors threshold holds that sweet spot in threshold. If you never heard it then you need to find it. lots of time on the beaches I hunt (your will be different) I set about a 5 on the dial 1 o'clock or even further to 2 o'clock. I find rings and gold all the time,at four scoops deep! The numbers mean nothing it's what your hearing while setting the threshold where your hunting. As with Auto I have had to use Auto in heavy infested iron/trash beaches. After going into Auto I was able to hear good targets. Last night I dug a Titanium /14K gold ring in iron infestation in Auto!Sensitivity equals sweep speed or lack of. These machines are slow motion machines with slow recovery times, learn that you'll find more treasures! In a 1 1/2 hr hunt I covered 150ft of beach sanded in. I found 8 targets 2 were rings, 1 gold 1 silver!
CJC states in his books, when asked how long does it take to tune the threshold on a hunt? His reply in a 6 hrs hunt certainly no more than 6 hrs. Whats that means is a constant adjustment when moving from wet to dry or black sand to white sand the machine needs to re tuned! its not Ron Popiel set it and forget it here! Low and slow!
