wet sand digging

OK- How do you keep wet sand from sliding down in and filling your hole when you are near or below the water line? I feel like I'm eating soup with a fork.

You Don't.... u need a scoop. what are u using? That's usually a pretty soupy sand/water mix that dose not fill the scoop but filters through while digging into the next load of sand/shell below it....Good Luck

If you don't have a scoop, you could always pour cement in the hole wait till it hardens and then pull out the cement with your target?

That just might work!!!

Just a stupid idea here, maybe you can use a short section of pipe (something lightweight) to stick down in the sand to make a coffer dam.

Not stupid at all. I use a five gallon bucket with the bottom cut off. Wedge it down and dig. Unless, of course, you're out past knee deep. Then just use your big long handled scoop and dig dig dig. Helps to have a strong magnet in the scoop so you're not chasin' around a nail, bobby pin or other ferrous trash item.:detecting:

Best of luck to ya!:biggrin:Happy Hunting!:)

Hey- Thanks for the ideas. Yes- water/ sand mixture slick. Dribble castle material. I'm using a RTG beach scoop. Sides of the hole slide down and the hole just gets wider. Tried the bucket/dam idea and that sort of worked but is awkward. Is the magnet at the bottom just for grabbing the pretender junk?

For wet sand digging you need the right kind of scoop that can dig vertically as quickly as possible.
To dig vertically you need a bent handle scoop so you can easily put the tip of the bucket straight down.
You have to be able to stand on the back of the bucket to drive it down as quickly as possible.
A sharp stainless lip on a aluminum bucket is necessary so the bucket can slice down easily.
Once the bucket is buried tip down and if your bucket is about 15 inches long you have a good probability of capturing the target.
Then you have to tilt the bucket to a horizontal position while it's still buried without dropping the target.(Strong handle and good leverage)
Then you have to break the ground suction holding the bucket in the wet sand which can multiply the bucket weight by about 4 times.
You do this by tilting the bucket on its heel.
Than since the wet sand doesn't drain easily you have to be able to easily carry the bucket to the surf to help flush it.
I have a assist handle to help carry the full bucket to the surf.
I do this all one handed because I don't want to set down my detector.

There is a lot to it when people say you need the "right" scoop.

I've been customizing my scoop to get it to this level.

Here's a pic you can visualize now how I use it.
