i was using my vaquero with a 11"widescan coil this morning on a soccer field that has been top dressed with a red soil of unknown origin.the vaquero was very difficult to ground balance and as it was raining i nearly stopped.however ,a glutton for punishment,i pressed on! a lot of falsings and re-balancing several times with little to show for my efforts.disc at foil, sense at 3,thesh at 1100.hunting shallow targets.would the vaquero behaved better if i had used the the standard 8"by9"concentric coil?normally the widescan performs well .i tried it in all metal.that didn't work.checked inside the coil cover when i got home.it was clean.when i turned on the vaquero at the start of the day and adjusting the threshold level,it was making a static, crackling noise through the earphones.it ain't the battery,it's fresh.i know that many of you have nothing to now that it's snowing, will have time to ponder on my problem and maybe suggest a cure . apart from the rain and the humid 35 degrees celcius and me walking around in a t shirt and shorts, life ain't to bad down under. hh see ya blowfly

Hay Blow Fly,

It may have something to do with tha wetness.

Some people say that wet soil increases depth
by causing conductors to conduct better when
they are wet or something like that.

Not sure how that works.

But if there is iron in tha ground, wouldn't that
make matters worse.

Here is a ground balancing method I have used
on bad ground.

Put a small coin, or any small target you want
to recover, on the ground.

Make sure it's ground with just the normal back
ground noise, and not a target below.

Sweep tha coil a few inches over tha placed target
while turning tha ground balance. Find tha best
response and see if you can hunt like that.

It will not get rid of tha noise, but you may get it
to where you can reconise targets.

Also, try it when it's dryer. That may help.

I would be interested to know your out come.

I have had a few places give me problems.

But tha more I learn, the more I can cope with
such things.

Good Luck,

Tabdog

Here where I live I'm plagued with red clay like dirt. I live in a town where up to the mid 60's iron ore was mined. I've found that my Tejon has very limited depth in these areas. Tabdog has a very good idea, I think I'll try that. Thanks Tabdog.
