wet grass

I have a slight problem and I hope you can help me. Since I am very new at this, does wet grass have anything to do with the MXT and the stock coil being unstable? My wife, the sweet and smart woman she is buried some items in our back yard for me to find. It has been raining here for the past few days and when it finally cleared a little I went out to try to find the items. Well I could not hit most targets, the MXT was very unstable and when I adjusted the gain down I could not hit a thing. Here lies the problem, She buried a gold loop earing and a 14k gold filled watch (the watch is in a plastic sandwich bag), if I cannot find them she says I owe her new ones. She has been out shopping!!! (I did ask my daughter if mom actually did bury them and she said she did, so they are actually out there...somewhere).
Next item is any suggestions as to where to shop for coils and accessories on the net? You may email it directly to my address so as not to start any trouble between suppliers. Thank-you Guys

Hi - ask her how deep she buried them.
The mxt will have no problen finding these.
ensure your gain is not too high - start out at 9 and try coin/jew mode at a discimination setting of 3 (preset).
use auto gnd balance.
grid the garden and sweep it methodiaclly, overlapping by at least 1/3rd on each sweep and you WILL get the goodies back!
good luck!!
I think shes just trying to get some new jewelry if you ask me...

You didn't explain how you set up the mxt.
First off, make sure you locked the lower rod and that the cable is tightly wound around the shaft, using the velcro strips, this will cut down on "falsing" due to vibration as you sweep the coil.
I presume that before your wife buried the items, you didn't air test them to get a VDI reading right? So make sure you turn down the Disc as low as possible. If your yard is clean (you swept before?), turn the Disc down all the way. Gold items can read down in the foil range or even lower.
Turn the gain down until you have a stable threshold and ground balance the mxt.
Sweep slowly and overlap the sweep by 50% to make sure you have good coverage.
If none of the above works, get down on your knees and start searching the lawn for telltale signs of where your wife plugged the grass.

It has still been raining here and I hope tomorrow to try out some of the things that have been mentioned. Oh, I will crawl on the grass if necessary to try to find the divot. Just wish the kid would have cut the grass before she buried the stuff!!!!

I would like to thank those who have tried to answer my question. I did find out why the MXT was unstable.
After going into the yard with a garden shovel and the MXT I found about 40+ feet of aluminum garden edging buried about 4" down. There is still more there and I am planning on taking it out so I will have a clean yard. The yard now reminds me of why the greens keeper used to shutter when I would go to play golf.
