Were gold plated rings sold as "gold rings" years ago?

I found this wedding band yesterday and, of course, the 14K gold that the stamp on the inside indicates, is gone from every part of this ring. I've found many rings like this that have lost all the gold to the surrounding soil. I wonder if the man that bought this ring, with a substantial portion of his salary back then, knew it was plated with a microscopic layer of gold.

Unfortunately, There has always been those who would take advantage of others...

HH,

In some cases, these were made to be samples of jewelry dealers but they should have had an additional stamp on them so you would know the difference. Of course, swindles and cons have happened like mentioned in the previous post...it pays to know your jeweler!

Ive never found a ring that was stamped 14k etc and was not legit but I have seen them...they do exist, so it pays to know what to look for. There is usually some sign to give it away or acid always knows the truth!

Years ago and today still..... beware of tourist hot spots especially in Mexico.
