Went to my favorite cellar hole spot today............

Pulled up where I normally park and noticed something new.The town put in a sign designating the road I walk on as a nature trail and a trail of "Historic Significance "to the town.Another sign reads..."The area of Newent Woods & The Old Lee road are of historic significance to the town.Removal of plant life, rock walls or artifacts are forbidden in and around this area. The Use of metal detectors is prohibited.Police take notice." I am now thinking what the.....happened here.I left and parked down the road and hiked up the rail road tracks to the road with out my gear.Checked cellar hole #3 and things looked fine.Went to #2 and seen a sign posted next to it same as #1 and some areas in between.I don't know if this was in the planning for the town to do for some time or what.I haven't damaged a thing or left it looking like some one has dug there. My only thought is I had a good thing come to an end and I don't think I was to blame. They did also install some seating benches along the road so I do think it was planned. On a bright side #3 must not be on town property as it is not marked and is on the other side of the tracks. Not going to push it.......I will stay away and enjoy what I did recover.

Take care, John.

<center> it happens all the time john
Im sure nothing you did just that they are now taking notice of that area
which is a good thing and bad for you  but good to save.
You will find more areas and heck hit the water now till fall :D

:thumbdown:more cannots than cans in the detecting dept.glad ya got some great stuff while it lasted.i'd try to hit the last hole and skirt the area cause ya never know.this is why i hate people and government,to me the less people the better.
if i was single and had no kids let me tell ya i'd be so far up the maine coast or one of the hundreds of islands that are either uninhabited or close too it.mass, conn, and ri suck!!!they tax the crap outta us and take away all the things we enjoy doing[or tax it].
sorry about the rant but,it really stinks ya lost a good spot to enjoy yourself because they needed a historical walkway.
great finds by the way John,ya had a great year.although i wasn't posting while i was off the internet,i checked it weekly on my wifes computer and you have had a great year.:yo:
here in my old haunts they took a pond that my uncles and we kids have fished since the early sixties.they made it a nature trail.the year before it opened my cousin garv went down there and there was one of the bays we used to fish and he said smelt like death.he went down to the waterline and there were hundreds of fish dead , floating and rotting .did they drop weedkiller[which is my theory]or was it a cold freeze that froze everything to the bottom cause it is a very shallow pond?either way, some of the best fishing in that area is now gone,it is a dead pool now.
at least theres a place for the gay mountain bikers to go now to meet[this is massachusetts].:rage:

I am thinking about still doing the one thats not posted on the other side of the tracks. But it will be next year...don't want to make waves right now. With the two casinos in the area we have a housing shortage so I can see more and more of land going to be developed. They also passed the plan to build the Utopia theme park and movie studio close by.On another note we should try to get some of the New Englanders together some time...It would be nice.

Take care, John

I used to detect a spot that was off limits. When I asked for permission I reminded them that none of the historical items would ever be recovered if they didn't allow someone to look for it. They agreed and gave me this huge yellow "Permit" tag I was to wear around my neck when detecting. I gladly donated all my finds to the local historical society, and part of the deal was items on display were to show that they were recovered by me.
It was a good deal for all..... (nobody ever asked me about the permit)

It's worth a try....

Oh... BTW... that little agreement got me onto a lot more great spots as time went on.... and I didn't have to look for them... people from the town and historical society would bring them to me.
