Went to local beach - closed to swimming (and detecting) in the water

As I was going over the beach a few people stopped to talk. One gentleman mentioned he had lost his wedding ring some 5 years back. He was doing yard work and throwing the weeds along the creek bank behind his house.

He had thought back then to get a detector but was told by the rental place there was no guarantee the detector they had to rent would find it so he gave up.

I gave him one of my detecting cards and my phone number and said to give me a call and I'd try to find it for him - wouldn't even charge him. He said the property no longer is his. (That shouldn't be a big problem if the present land owner allows us to look for it.) Have to wait to see if he wants it bad enough to give me a call.

One never knows where items might be found - in this case in or near a creek.
Am hoping he calls and we can arrange to go find it.

Most beaches (water areas - not the sand) are closed here in my county now or soon will be. While some places allow no detecting during the swimming season, this county doesn't allow detecting in the water when they close down the beaches for the season. Signs are posted that this coming weekend will be the last time the beaches are open for swimming (and detecting). Week days are now out of the question for detecting in thses areas. Had looked forward to Labor Day week end and then hitting the water only to find no one allowed in the water period.

Need to find other places to go I guess.

Anyone ever have any luck at boat launches on inland lakes?

They don't post that beaches are closed here in this county. Most folks have the common sense to stay out of the water when it's cold, unless they have waders.

If you're going to start doing boat launches, get ready for bottlecaps and pulltabs. I've searched a couple around here, and get a ton of junk. You might want to find a way to mount a really STRONG "super magnet" onto your scoop, so that when you get a target that is possibly a bottlecap, just put the magnet over it and see if it comes up. I haven't been able to find a magnet like that yet, so I haven't a clue as to how to mount it.

Only thing I can suggest is maybe start working the grassy areas. Most of the public beaches here were built in the 40's. I've pulled Wheat's out of three of them, silver out of two, and a IH out of one. Of course, they are really, really, junky. What size coil do you have on your 1280X? I usually run with my 8" coil on my CZ-5, but sometimes I go to my 5" "hockey puck".

seems they keep the sprinkler system in the grassy area where the people put their towels and such down. I do have another detector (Garrett with Graphic Target Analysis) which will allow me to 'notch out' the sprinkler heads once I have one to use as a test item. After that no more sprinkler heads. On the other hand if they ever lose one I could find it for them using the opposite and notching out everything except the sprinkler heads. Still a no-go.

As for the magnet there is one I found with a 50 pound pull and comes with a 2 to 3 foot handle - extendable if I remember correctly and the price was something like $10. The magnet is strong - had to fight to separate one from the others on the metal shelf

The 1280x came with the 8 inch coil.

Thanks for the info Allen
