went to cambridge today whith the M-6 & 4x 6 shooter

dicided i was going to dig all targets that worked for 1.5 hrs and i was getting tired i was finding lots of nails bottle tops tabs at 4" foil and a few coins 2 quarters 7 dimes 5 nickles 15 pennys one quarter was right in front of an aluminum bleacher post and i was not shure if it was the post or a quarter aluminum posts sound like qurters so i turned the coil sidways and shure enugh 6" from the post was a quarter thats what i like about this 4x 6 coil it gets whear no other can my favorite so far fo parks and wood chip lots i did try it in the deep woods and it just was to wimpy on its depth to find much defenetly not a relic coil but the stock is no better if i want to get close to a tree im kept back from the tree by the fackt that the detection zone is in the middle of the coil now a DD would be better it would get right up to the trees edge thats why im going to try the 8" excelerator coil i would have already smashed my 9.5 but it has use as a comparison coil whith other coils so ive spared it so far well got to go and trap a gopher at the end of the driveway he just started digging

Gunnar..You have tried a lot of coils..Do the rest of us a favor..
Sit down post your findings on all you have tested in the field. Include depth and stability, and how close you could get to metal objects with each.

IE: 6x10 DD- 6 inch depth- noisy-8 inches from metal posts etc. (Just an example not factual what I posted)
Thanks,
Elton

Elton, there are a lot of coils for the M6 and the rest of the E series detectors. You have to be careful of what some of us say about the coils. A lot depends on what you are using the coil to find and what is the mineralization of your ground. I have found how to test my ground using Jeff Fosters method. The ground here in Illinois has been between 5 and 7. This ground has low mineralization. In this ground the 9.5 is a good coil. It is deeper than the 6 x 10, it ID's more accurate, and the depth readings are more accurate. Several guys I know use them all the time and do well.

Air tests using boards doesn't give the true picture, what's important is how the coil performs in your ground, not my ground or someone else's ground in a different part of the country. The 6x10 does separate targets better and I use it a lot.

I also have the 8" DD excelerator and it's depth is very close to the 9.5. It also has proved to be a good coil. I got the 6x10 free from Whites and use it because it covers more ground than the 8". I have the little 5" excelerator and it is what I use in the trashiest areas, it is smaller then 5" and looks like a hockey puck.

One guy on the forum who's opinion I respect doesn't like elliptical coils, and another doesn't like heavy coils. One expert on another forum doesn't like excelerators and some guys on this forum do like them. Jeff Foster has done some pretty extensive coil comparisons and his results don't back up some guys opinions. Guys who have been using the MXT for years can't even decide if the C/J or relic mode is deeper and they both can't be right.

I've been using my MXT for two years and the longer I use my detector the more I realize I have a lot to learn. In most cases, remember what we say is just our opinions and we are in most cases not experts, just guys enjoying a great hobby.

By the way I've weighed the three coils with their lower shafts. 9.5, 6x10, 8". They are all within 1.5 oz of each other. Rob

Thank you Mr.Rob.very informative !!

what rob says is right , the ground you have in your place may be far difrent from anoka sand i would say the anoka sand is avrage, it is visibley brown from magnitite and vocanic rock fragments as well as 25% feldspar feldspar is a minearal found in granite and has by wheight 68 % silica 17 % alumina the same alumina we make aluminum out of 10% pottasium salt 3% soidum and 1% iron volcanic rocks have 8% to 12% iron and some are magnetic as well as containing 10% magnesium and 8% calcium our red clay in the feild has 7 % iron 2 % pottasium 1 % soidium and 1 % titanium a red clay from ohio called redart has 7% iron most red clays have 4 to 8 % iron and combined pottasiumand sodium of at least 4% and 1 % titanium most biotites have 22 to 30 % iron thats why they will set off metal detectors i was doing pottery until i got thrown out of my house and i studied geology and soils it one of my favorite subjects you may want to look into local geology and see what kind of soil you have i have glacial out wash soil average i think keep in mind sea water has about 3% sodium and when washed over the clean sand can give you problems because pure water will not conduct electricity it has to have a electrolite like sodium pottasium iron ect disoved in it then it will conduct electricity so if the metal detector works on the conductivity of a metal then a salty water can change things and keep in mind wood ash has almost 15 % souluble pottasium and sodium in feldspars its locked in the rock someday i will figure it all out but not today

Boogle the mind with all that info running around in it !!!! Whew !!!
