here's what the Fisher 1280x found:

Though not 100% gold to the right of the pennies and the one lone dime is a 'golden' bracelet. Sure was shiny coming up in the scoop but noticed some rust.

A closer look with a loupe shows it is just 14K gold plated - guess that explains the rust.

Still making modifications to the PVC scoop. Did find that magnet with the bowl attached. Removed the bowl and cable tied the magnet inside the scoop. Works well. Thanks for the tip - think it was Troy (sorry if I got he name wrong).
Should have listened to Waterman when he said to use 1/4 screen(?). Realized today the gutter screen material isn't suitable as the holes are too small. Will have to look for that screen Waterman suggested.

Thanks guys for the tips and suggestions.

Hello Pete,
I can't take credit for the magnet trick as I learned it from reading your posts & replies!
I'm going to do the same to my scoop. It amazes me at some of the tiny pieces of metal the 1280 finds. The 1280x sure likes pennies doesn't it. I must have found a million (well maybe not that many) with mine. I run mine at 0 discrimination and very high or full on sensitivity in freshwater. I sure do dig a lot of junk but I've gotten a lot of deep coins and things that I would have missed with the sensitivity turned down. I also find it easier to use a mask and snorkel in the water (inches to 6 ft) it is easy to fan a target until it is uncovered then scoop it. It's also fun to watch the sunfish & small bass that follow me around hoping I uncover some food for them.

Wish I could remember but someone told me there was a small bowl with a magnet attached (for small parts) he had used the magnet from. I found the parts bowl for about $3.50 in a store called American Eagle. I'm sure it will be found in some of the 'tool' stores - like the ones that sell the cheap foreign made stuff.

The same type of magnet can be found on the bottom of those magnetic mount CB radio antennas - if ya can find an old CB magnetic mount antenna.'

The 1280x sure does pick up some small iron rusty items. Found one item maybe a fish hook that deteriorated, almost as thin as a sewing common pin and about as long as the fingernail on my little finger. Up until I got the dime I was thinking iron and nails was about all this (1280x) is good for LOL.

Thinking of making another scoop using 1/2 holes instead of the 5/8.

A friend of mine suggested using the gutter screen but to form an L out of it and put some on the back end and a little along the bottom of the tube. Not to block off all the holes like I did yesterday. Makes sense to me now that I have field tested the scoop.

My outings won't be as often now the price of gas has gone up. If you haven't drilled the holes yet - proably 1/2 inch would be better than the 5/8 ones.

Will probably get around to a mask and snorkel next spring. Wearing waders and snorkelling is a bad combination hahahaha.
Waders make it so one can stay in the water longer without chilling the body. Just can't go out as deep wearing them.

and maybe some fins. There's a couple beaches here, one I can't get out to the buoys, and one with a rocky bottom that fanning would work really good for. I already have a ping-pong paddle to fan with.

I have some waders, and one of these years, I'm going to use them to get into the water at a nearby lake before the marina puts out the docks. There's got to be some good stuff in there, as I know there are several volleyball nets set up in the water. Of course, being boat docks, there's bottlecaps and pulltabs EVERYWHERE!

Have you thought about making a floating sifter box? I have three sifters, all with 1/2" hardware cloth. All I need to do to make one into a floater is to get a big "noodle" and tie it to the box with cable ties. Then I just need to attach a line from the box to my utility belt (quick-release clip in case I need to ditch).

hadn't thought about using one of those 'noodles' - was thinking of a motorcycle tire inner tube. Might give more floatation if I need to use it for a life saving device than the noodle might do. Probably have to use the same kind of lube on the inner tube as I do the gasket in the metal detector to keep the rubber lasting longer and pliable.

Probably in time will add mask, snorkel and fins and possibly a hookah unit since I don't skin dive.
