Went to a local park this morning.

Between the rain showers. I went to check out the work progress at a couple of the local schools, Well one of them is finished and the other is going to have a huge plat area and this is one of the better schools that I have hit, I know it will be a while but this should be a good future site. Well Guys I shortened the lower rod on my mxt and so far my shoulder hasn't bothered me. I went out for a while yesterday and used the stock coil, Man I couldn't wait to get home and get that thing off the end of my mxt and put the excelerator back on. I guess I have just gotten used to the big coil but there seems to be a difference of night and day in the way they run. I tell ya guys if ya get a good excelerator coil you won't take it off the detector. Anyways I dug 2 pennies at that park today and 749 ^%$#@!!!! twist tops. Went to a school yesterday that I have not hit in 4 months. Someone else has kept it pretty clean for me while I was away, I did find 5 dimes 4 pennies and a small silver ring. With all these super high tech detectors I'll sure be glad when they put some of that tech. into a machine and it can tell the difference in a twist top and a penny or dime, and I cant figure how the ()ell something the size of a beer can even remotely resembles a penny or dime, but I guess this may be further down the road. Kinda see a few of the peoples point when they asked " if you gotta dig it all why bother spending the extra money on a machine with an ID, Anyways enuff for now, hope all are well.

I know exactly what you mean about the trash sounding like treasure. I too have often wondered about reasons people buy the machines they buy. I currently just have two machines. The Minelab Advantage and the White's MXT. Both are great machines and quite honestly, one hunts as deep as the other. I know. Minelab now advertises the Advantage as their relic machine. But take it from a guy who has been using one for 18 months. This thing will coin hunt too! I love the way it handles. Lightweight, easy on batteries, sensitive, great discrimination capabilities and rugged. But, after digging my share of junk, I wanted more. I wanted a machine with visual target ID and depth ID. I wanted more than one tone. I wanted a machine like my old Sovereign Elite, but one that would not be such a slow beast. So, I bought the MXT. Great machine and seemed to offer everything I wanted in a detector with VDI. HOWEVER, when I am running the MXT in coin mode, ignoring the VDI and digging all those repeatable signals, I have to ask myself why I am swinging the MXT and leaving the Advantage in the truck? <img src="/metal/html/confused.gif" border=0 width=15 height=22 alt=":?">

When I bought my MXT I was thinking I could seperate stuff also by using the meter but all Ive really been able to seperate is the higher end coins from junk so far. This goes both ways. When I beach hunt with it, I usually ignore the higher VDIs to concentrate on the gold. I dig alot of rusted bottlecaps IDing as coins and like Digger said below sometimes I just ignore the meter altogether.
You can hunt with the disc all the way turned down helping to eliminate any masking but then every signal your checking the meter.
Whites is pretty close here though in making a super detector. It has a lightning quick reset, very sensitive to small stuff, goes deep, works on salt water bay beaches(still havent taken it to the ocean), and the balance is good although I dont like the weight for extended hunting. Also very good battery life.

Hey Ray, replace your name with mine, because that is exactly what I've been dealing with at a 300 yr. old colonial site, that is being turned into a park. Between DEEP FLATTENED OUT soda/beer cans,
SHREDDED UP PIECES OF CANS, I'm becoming very disgusted with my MXT. I'm looking into the NEW FISHER MACHINES CZ-70 & CZ3D to see if their TARGET SEPARATION is better than the MXT, and if their claimed LOCK-ON TARGET ID is as good and accurate like they proclaim, or just more SALES HYPE. I do like the idea of far more tone ID, but it will take alot more than that, for me to switch detectors at this time. But, I too, know the FRUSTRATION YOU'RE FEELING! Hope your outings get alot better! LOL/HH, NamVetLesTreasureSeeker

I know the feeling about digging every signal. I too probably dig more than I should. What I have learned however is this..............
Before I dig I make sure I get a repeatable signal, not broken and a repeatable vdi reading, not jumping all over the place. I have done a bit of research on this and so far I have found that if you get a even slightly broken tone or a jumpy vdi it is allways trash. Several weeks ago I got a solid repeatable beeb and a vdi of 14 that repeated, turned out to be an awesome saphire ring that is worth a few bucks.
I also started to use 0 disc which seems to get a bit more depth for some reason. Relic mode will sort out the iron by the honk you get when you swing over it.
Just some thoughts , hh and good luck

Thanks for the input, TEK, I use the 5 and 14 inch excelerators, some are having issues with these coils , something about the windings not being right but kellyco does replace them if they are defective, I got the 14 and absolutely love it, And you will soon find that VA has some of the worst ground around in places, The 14 is a bit heavier than the stock but the extra coverage and depth are worth it, It takes a little getting used to but it is a great coil, the five inch is a super little coil in trash and I know it will get wheat pennies at 6 inches. So far Kellyco are the only ones selling this coil but they are great to deal with. There like the walmart of metal detectors, if they aint got it you probally don't need it. I like your post about raining money, very commendable thing you did, most woulda kept the cash and tried to cash a few checks, good to know there are still honest people out there. And guys are far as the twist tops go the have a good clear beep and the vdi does not bounce a lot, just got a little fustrated and hadn't been out for a couple months, just a little rusty as to what the swingy thingy was tellin me, I normally run disc at 0 relic mode trigger forward with a low hu8mming threshold but in heavy trash threshold just under sound is a little smoother. Just kinda hard to keep a spot real neat when you diggin after a 8-9 inch deep coin in a nicely kept park. Also have noticed than nine times out of ten when a coin shoes 0 depth when pin pointed, if you can see it on top it aint a coin, And I have yet to find a coin deeper than the machine reads it at, normally right at the indicated depth or slightly shallower. Any ways hope alll are well and dodging these hell sent wind storms.

I know whatcha mean Digger, I had a fisher that beeped on everything and would sound off good on 9 inch dimes, but ya just had to dig it all, thought the ID was a quick cure for that.....WRONG !!!!!!!
LIKE I HAVE SAID, GOTTA TAKE THE GOOD WITH THE BAD AND SOMETIMES DIG THE BAD TO GET THE GOOD. WHEN IN DOUBT DIG, GET TIRED, GO HOME , COME BACK TOMORROW AND TRY AGAIN !!!

I think the key is to pass on the broken tones and jumping numbers- trust the machine if you put in some disc- like maybe 3 or so it seems to high tone and "thunk" on good stuff and break-up on the junk. Try a few and see if it makes a difference and actually works.

You should be able to tell the difference between a penny and a beer can by their size. in pinpont mode on your MXT, you can tell a huge size difference between a penny and a soda or beer can. Give it some practice.

AS FAR AS THE CANS GO I HAVE LEARNED THE DIFFERENCE, JUST WISH THE MACHINE WOULD. THE EXCELERATOR WORKS BETTER WITH LITTLE OR NO DISC, ALOT OF THE TOPS DON'T GIVE A BROKEN TONE AND HAVE A PRETTY SOLID VDI.
