Went to a large park where they...

used to have carnivals up until 5 or 6 years ago. I spent about 1.5 hours surching maybe a 30x30 foot section and pulled out all modern change:
17 quarters
1 dime
1 nickel
12 pennies
& a religious pendant that rangup as a quarter

Pretty much the whole thing was sounding off mostly for pennies & dimes, so I tried to skip them for now, I will go back and start another section (im gridding it up in my head). I want to get all of the quarters first, then I will go through and get the dimes, then the pennies. Seriously I couldn't take a baby step without getting a penny or a dime signal!!! I wish I had the time just to get all the targets in 1 swoop, but that would take forever.

5 people came up to me and said they were watchen me pull out coins left and right and they are thinking of getting a metal detector to get some coins for them self. So thats why I want to get the quarters first.

Scenario 1. You are finding tons of coins in all denominations:

Spectator: Hi. You sure are digging a bunch or coins. Having any luck?
You: Not really. Just a bunch of pennies and pull tabs. I sure wish they were worth something. Can you think of any place else where there might be better hunting?

Scenario 2. You just found a big gold ring.

Spectator: Hi. You sure are digging a bunch or coins. Having any luck?
You: Not really. Just a bunch of pennies and pull tabs. I sure wish they were worth something. Can you think of any place else where there might be better hunting?

Scenario 3. You have found 5 silver coins in a row.

Spectator: Hi. You sure are digging a bunch or coins. Having any luck?
You: Not really. Just a bunch of pennies and pull tabs. I sure wish they were worth something. Can you think of any place else where there might be better hunting?

Sceanrio 4.

Spectator: I'm thinking about getting me a metal detector. What should I get?
You: I'll make you a good deal on this one right here. It all looked so easy on the DVD. (Produce all the pull tabs you've dug that day.)

If you can't tell, I am much happier when I have my spots to myself.

I do what you're doing with my spots too. If a site has a lot of quarters and dimes I dig them first. Later go back and get everything else. Unless someone beats you to it. Give it one real good day. 5 or 6 hours. See what kind of day you can have.

Those newbies have to learn like you did at the beginning ,so your chances of getting all the coins first will be in your favour.

At least someone thinks like me:thumbup:
Scenario all the time.
Hey, you find anything good with that.
Nope, just pennies and pulltabs:rofl:

My area has some good carnival and campsites. Find where the main entrance was. I will tell you from experience your detector will go wacko when you hit this area but I will bet you its not trash. If tokens were used they will ring in as zinc pennies. The first time I hunted these areas I dug nothing below a copper penny Averaging about 150 holes in 3 to 4 hours with very little trash dug.

I always have a good handful of ring pulls and bottle caps in my trash pocket before I start each hunt.

Spectator. Have you found anything interesting?
Me. Not really unless your into ring pulls or bottle caps, magically pulling them from my pocket.
Of course if you wish to throw down some pound coins to see if I can find them, your welcome.

That last sentence allows me to then continue uninterrupted, as they usually fly away very quickly.

very nice hunt. When someone asks me how I'm doing MD'ing, I always tell them alot of old cans and pull tabs.

Around where the rides were is good also, especially the ones that turned the rider upside down - like my old favorite ' THE HAMMER .

Back in the good old days when anyone with a detector drew a crowd my old man used to tell them we were geologists from Standard Oil or some big company. That usually got rid of them.

Your father used to detect too? How about your children and grand children? This could be your article, Bill. Four generations of family hunting a look at the differences between machines, techniques, and finds over 40 or 50 years.
