Went "tectin' with Mountain Man today...

Mountain Man has been Civil War relic hunting for 30 years. He knows lots of good spots, and I always get a fuzzy feeling inside when he lets me tag along on a relic hunt. Today we worked some pastures and fields around Amelia, Virginia. It turned out to be a nice, spring-like day. We soon had to shed our jackets, and for a short while, were working on a tan.

[size=medium] My first good find was this Union eagle coat button. It wasn't deep at all, maybe 2". I have to keep reminding myself that those "light" buttons are not deep, like the Confederate "I" button I found last year that was 1 1/2" deep.

Later, I got a chewed musketball and a Civil Wa bullet. Went to a new place and found this early militia one-piece convex eagle button. Made prior to 1820, so there's 2 possiblilities: it was either lost by a soldier during the War of 1812, or it was lost by a Confederate soldier during the Civil War who just happen to be wearing it to hold his coat together. Also in the picture is 2 pieces of buckshot, Indian head nickle, and part of a harmonica reed.

Thanks for the hunt, Mountain Man, let's do it again soon.

Glad to see you finding stuff so late in the year... good thing you got lots of firewood....
we are sending some crap that way ----
BTW ---
I'm agreeing with Rays statement last week.... Golf ....
As for detecting in Missouri ..???
between the summer heat and humidity, ticks, chiggars, snakes, and rock hard ground....
..... and the winters ice storms, snow and wind....
It's just not as much fun as it was in the northwest.
