Went out today and all I got was this penny

I got permission to hunt the property around a town hall that was est. 1867. The area was full of modern trash and old iron. I got a couple really good signals 179-180 but they were vertical and bent nails.
Then by the outhouse I got a 175 and dug the pictured 1864 Indian. The only coin I dug in about 1-1/2 hrs. I will return with the 8" coil but I believe the area was searched by others throughout the years.
The field between the hall and road on the right harbored rows of trees in a 1955 aerial so I suspect an orchard. The alfalfa, grass and clover are too high to search it right now.
I cant tell if the penny is an L series. I don't know if the L is raised or indented.

I could use some map help as I'm not sure if the town hall icon represents the actual building or the square marker next to it.

Beautiful 1864 IH cent Ism! The black square represents the approx location. The 8" coil will suprise you in seperation ability. Best of luck and look forward to your update - Jim

1864 that is a nice find , I only found a penny today a wheat cent in the farm feild and it was so coroded that i could not read the date i think the Indians had 12% nickle in them and fare a bit better

A great coin, the history alone is centered around the Civil War era.

Nice find Ism. It's in pretty good shape. Even if the area has been hunted before, you just have to find the sweet spot everyone else missed over the years. Even if they didn't miss any spots, they probably didn't get everything either - keep at it man.

Good looking IH  CW era to boot there should be silver there the 8" will pull it out GH Jim

Thanks everybody for the encouragement, I will give it a couple more tries. Yes this Indian cleaned up pretty nice. I have found quite a number of indians this year...I think more than al the others combined. I used to complain that all I found were so corroded that I could baely get a date (park fertalizers?). Anyhow every Indian I found this year were from fields and they cleaned up fairly nice considering.
Gunnar, you are right about the alloys but this isnt the nickle variety. Aparently there were 3. The first being the copper/nickle (1860-1864), then later that year they came out with the bronze in 2 varieties, plain and L. The copper/nickle variety is thicker and has a lighter shade than the bronze.
EP.....glad to see you're back...wink!

Good looking indian. Yea, indians read in at least 3 different VDI locations on the scale I think. Never dug a fatty but I hear (and according to the 180 chart, I think) that those are the ones that will read like a pull tab. Have to reference my chart to refresh my memory on where they all read.

Very nice IH! I have yet to find my first IH detecting. The only one I have found was from the bank! HH. Matt

Awesome shape!
