Went out this evening, tectin' a bit...

Went to a new place I hadn't been before. It was a field right beside the road where both the Confederate and Union army marched within the same day. It was during the final days of the war when Grant was in hot pursuit of Lee's Confederate army. I was detecting parallel to the road, in the field about 20 feet from the edge of the pavement. I could hear several big dogs barking across the road... a very rural road. A car might come by once every 15 minutes. The barking got louder, and soon, 2 large twin bull dogs came up over the hill, and starting challenging me. They charged out into the middle of the road, barking aggressively, but didn't come into the field. I basically just ignored them, and continued swinging the detector. A few seconds later, they were joined by the neighbor's dog, a mongrel german shepherd. He joined them in the middle of the road, and I thought the three of them might work up enough nerve to test me a little further. I was glad I had my wife's small 357 magnum on my right hip. The dogs continued to be aggressive for about 10 minutes, and finally the german shepherd laid down and barked, and the 2 bull dogs went back down into their yard.

After about 10 minutes I found my first bullet.

A few minutes later, found a second bullet.

Soon, a large flat button and brass ring from the same hole.

And finally after making my way back to my truck, I hit a good signal. Dug a hole, and could see the ovaled edge of white lead, with divits in it... oh man, I thought I had an oval belt plate or box plate. After digging it out, I found that it is a piece of lead approx. 1/4" think made in the shape of a heel, with 3 holes in it to attach (I'm presuming) to the heel of a boot as a heel plate. Why anyone would want to use near a pound of lead on the bottom of their boot is beyond me, particularly when you have to march 20 miles a day with it... Heck, I complain about swinging a 9 oz. plastic coil for 3 hours.
