We finally got a decent day here in Michigan so I wanted to try some outdoor shots. Anyone familiar with the area will recognize that I was on Belle Isle, one of Detroit's oldest city parks. I have to admit that I was a bit disappointed as most of my pictures seem a bit washed out from the bright sunlight reflecting off the residual ice and snow. I guess I should have stepped it down a notch or two to compensate for all the reflected light. Oh well, I guess that's part of the learning process.

This was one of my first photos of the day. I should have underexposed this by at least two stops to try and capture more of the color in the swans. From now on I will definitely bracket my mid-day white shots.

This is the "Peace Carillon" shot over one of the old ice skating islands. The area around the monument is actually very well manicured, but I thought the wildness of the island foliage would add a sense of age to the photo.

I did a few shots of the horticulture building, playing around with my depth of field just for fun. I tried some with the building in focus and some with the bushes in focus. I think I like the bushes in focus the best for some reason.

Here is a standard, straight on shot of the casino. She is a beautiful old building even in this very uninspired shot, eh?

There were lots of shadows and graceful angles to this old building and I decided to play around with them a bit.

This shot somewhat frustrated me. I could sense there was a great photo in there just waiting to be shot but somehow I simply couldn't find it. I think maybe the softer evening shadows would be more favorable to this shot than were the morning shadows.

This is a shot from one of the porch balconies looking out toward the Detroit skyline. I think a fill flash to bring out some of the balconies beauty would have enhanced this photo. In any case, I like the effect of blending the old and the new in this shot.

Last, but not least, I really felt drawn to the intricate beauty of the towers of the casino. Again, the harsh morning light doesn't do these works of art justice. I think either a very early morning sunrise shot or a late evening sunset shot would be far more favorable to the towers. Also, a timed exposure to add a sense of movement to clouds would have been a nice touch.

I liked the pictures of the ducks on the ice, and that old building is beautiful. That camera takes some clear, sharp pictures.
It was a beautiful day down here in South Texas too! Lucky for us, we do not have any frozen ground and the temperature reached 70 degrees. While I am restricted on physical activities, it did not prevent me from spending time outdoors, and I did enjoy myself. I have always loved the spring time of year.
Thanks for sharing the pictures and please have a great day! Kelley (Texas)
