Went hunting with Ray MO and got surprised by of all things... DEPTH...

First off Ray spied a old cemetary that he thought must have had a church at one time. We investigated and sure enough we found the remains of one on the side. We then proceeded to hunt what we thought was the parking lot. Ray had the new Minelab 17 inch coil on and I had the stock Pro Coil. Ray immediately hit an indian penny. I immediately found nothing. :) I moved further out to the street and Ray came along a bit later and hunted along side me. He then hit a nice 9 to 10 inch screamer and he called me over to it. My coil screamed also saying even more definitely then his did that it was a quarter. No one could miss that target with a CTX at least apparently. Ray dug it out and had himself a seated quarter. 1854 I believe. I'll wait for him to post up about it. He then got another hit a while later and retrieved a 2 foot piece of wire. He almost forgot to go over there and recheck the now unmasked hole and he got a barber dime. I only had 2 hits on my own that seemed to be coins at this site and both turned out to look like bullets but they weren't. We weren't sure what they were actually. Both of us checked the targets and thought coin.

But the above isn't why I posted. We went to another park a while later and this time I found a couple of wheaties and one presumably indian penny that I still haven't cleaned up enough to know. Just after the third coin I dug up I moved ahead about 7 feet from my last dig and I got a solid 11-45 and it was deep. It kept telling me it was 11 to 12 inches deep. I was running 26 manual in the standard coin mode so I wasn't doing much if anything to account for getting that strong of a hit that deep and in a park that was so cleaned out there was hardly any clad even shallow. I circled the target and was able to hit it everywhere. It even occasionally hit 11-46. I started the dig as Ray was 75 yards away and didn't want to come that far over. At 10 inches I finally got a solid beep on the pin pointer.. I kept going with two more excavations before I got the last clump out that contained the target. Once uncovered it was a 1904 Barber dime, (pictured here) Using me shovel to get a clue on how deep the dig was I determined it to be between 11 and 12 inches. Just what the depth meter had told me. What was surprising to me was that it was a dime that deep giving the for sure hit. Not sure about the rest of you but I've dug a quite a few 9 inch dimes but cannot really think of a deeper dime I've dug with that much of a hit from any machine I've owned. I've gotten large cents and one silver dollar both at 13 inches. Heck the silver dollar rang as a penny on the Explorer and didn't start to really show off until the Sun Ray probe got pretty darn near it.

I also explored the now empty hole to make sure there wasn't another dime in there... :)

That's it.. Here's the coin.

I was impressed and now I'm going to guard my stock coil with my life. :D

Great find and story. I went out into the yard when I got home and changed from auto +3 to manual checking a dime on the ground and I think you are correct on the manual being deeper. By running manual is there anything different that you need to do from time to time while hunting. Like noise cancel or GB again?

If it starts chattering either slow way down or lower your sensitivity. If you're holding it still and it's chirping you need to do something. Sometimes "Auto" is your only choice. "Plus 3" with no chirping is fine in areas that are making you change the manual settings constantly. On a side note that I didn't even mention to Ray yesterday. There were some power lines above us and I reduced manual down to 16 for the fun of it and seemed to still see some 7 inch deep things that I didn't want to dig but I would encourage you to remember to test next time you have a deepie. If it will still work at 16 I'd equate that to driving in a snowstorm. Why would you put on your brights when parking lights would really work better.

On to the "Noise Cancel". Randy (Digger) has told me if you aren't doing anything for a minute he likes to noise cancel a lot. He feels your surroundings are always changing and why rely on something you couldn't possibly sense on your own. He also only does the auto version of the noise cancel. He never picks a channel he's had luck with even if he knows which one it's going to pick.

Oh.. If this does help tell Randy and others you picked this up from me in any future posts...

Hope that helps and you find someone to hunt with besides Ray who feels it's his job to excavate silver in front of other detectorists. :D

Good story! I agree. the stock coil is HARD to beat. I have never been a fan of big coils.

I've never seen anything like a big coil though to find "on edge" coins. So if you're stuck hunting everyone elses leftovers a big one and a tiny one are really needed. If you're doing your research though stock smokes. My other hunting buddy, Mike Moutray, still seems to use the stock coil more then anything else. In fact I can't remember every seeing him put anything else on though I know he owned them.

Thanks Guvner I will try it next time I get out. Do you go to the 417 club meetings? Your president sends me the news letter and one of these days I will make a trip up for one of those meetings. Oh and I will telling everyone you're the CTX guru (if my feeble abilities can make it work). Crayons may be appropriate for me though

Congrats on the DEEP dime Guv. That is one of the deepest dimes (if not THE deepest) I've heard being dug with the stock coil on the CTX, to date. Nicely done!

As to your comments about noise cancel......... In my opinion, having the "proper" noise cancel channel selected is one of THE most important settings for maximizing the performance of the CTX 3030. I haven't always felt that way about other detectors, usually just setting them to one of the more quiet channels. But now, with a lot of time on the CTX, I know I can set the Auto NC channel and feel confident I am operating with the most capable channel. I've tried manaully selecting each of the other channels, listenting for the "most quiet one", just to see if I could "outsmart" the CTX. But I've yet to find one that performs nearly as well as the one it selects automatically. And like you said, environmental noise changes continually. So I don't hesitate to reconfigure it on a regular basis. JMHO HH Randy

Great info!

Well telling people I'm a guru and using crayons will probably make people believe you believe but... You might want to pay attention around here a little more as I'm not the last word on much of anything. I'm just impressed that the machine carries so much of the weight around here. It's like software on a computer. At first only the best could use "WordStar" and "WordPerfect" but those fell to the ease of use of programs like "Word for Windows". Now anyone who tries half heartedly is quite the word processor.

Thanks for sharing that Guv. Nice finds too boot. Good job!

I can't seem to get non-silver coins deeper than 9" or so thus far as my ground is somewhat iron mineralized, but still tryin...

Guv, the depth on the CTX has been amazing. I was hunting a park with my buddy Gary at a spot we knew had once had an old Grandstand in the 1920's. I found 6 silver dimes that day and one LC (my first) and all were between 9-11" My buddy couldn't believe how deep these dimes were hitting and very solid too. My settings were Manual 27 with a little falsing at times, and Ferrous-Coin Combined. The stock coil is just awesome!
