Went Hunting Meteorites

Toko my GMT out hunting meteorites on Tuesday, I did manage to find 1 and it was 17.4 grams but I met another guy there hunting with a GMT also . I showed him the setting I used to find mine and he set his up the same and found a meteorite over 25grams...that is as hight as my scale went. all in all it was a great day.

Hey AZ,

Just curious. I've never really read about this type of detecting. How do you hunt meteorites and how do you know it is really from off-planet and not just a chunk of something from Earth?

I am not sure how big a market there is but gold sells by the ounce and meteorites sells by the gram.....
I was shown a strewn field here in AZ and had the pleasure of hunting with others that have found many meteorites and had some of them classified by ASU so I know the 2 that I have found meet all the guidelines to be from space...they have a nice fusion crust, are heavier than most other rocks that size and are very attracted to a magnet, in fact that is how I picked them both up.
on the forums at nuggetshooter.com there is a meteorite forum and they answer a lot of questions there.
Thanks
Rick in AZ

I have been hunting these meteorites in Arizona, an area called Franconia....there is nothing there now but a train siding.
This is about 35 miles west of Kingman AZ.

Thanks for the info. I have a very good friend who lives in Kingman. Maybe I will pay him a surprise visit and do a little metorite hunting. That TV treasure show got me interested. Even my wife.

Well Jackintexas if ya get out to Kingman let me know I will be happy to show you the area I found mine in.....

What detector are you using? are they showing up as hot rocks or cold rocks? I know at quartzsite they sell pretty well.
