Went detecting today...

Some of you remember a couple of months ago, I told you I had got permission to detect a homesite that dates back to the 1740's. I posted a picture of the stone foundation that the house now sits upon. I have not mentioned it again because on my first outing there, just quivering with anticipation, my hopes were soon shot down when I started digging pop cans at 6 and 8", along with other memorable keepers... like carjack stands, brake shoes, and the bottom of an iron. Needless to say, fill has been added over the grounds of this 270 year old house... just made me sick. I spent several hours digging deep modern junk (I was only concentrating on deep targets). I decided to go back today to work the fields. Unfortunately the ground was frozen. I broke my shovel trying to dig the first target, and had to walk all the way back to the truck to get my backup shovel. Tried to dig but the ground was just to frozen.

I did walk around and study the fields and woods. A lot of dozer work had been done in the past, you could see where the dirt 4 foot high had been pushed into the woods and stopped. Even found a good sized dump on the backside of a steep hill, but a lot of it has been dozed over with fill 3 feet deep as well.

Below are a few of the surface bottles I was able to kick up, along with a big crock pot, you can see ice on the bottom of it. Lots of wide mouth bottles and even part of a watch band.

I will try detecting there when the ground thaws out, but so far, I've been totally bummed on this place. I'm sure there are many great finds there but buried forever. I think I'll go back to the stage depot.
