Went back for the chain.

About a month ago I was at the river and getting a chain signal and a huge storm came up. Had to leave when the lightning started. I don't know if this was the same chain and don't know if it's gold because it has no markings and I haven't tested it yet. Anyway, I hadn't planned to go back to the river since somebody is working it with a PI machine, but decided to give it one last try. Found this chain and a little butterfly which I'm sure is junk and a leaf like piece of jewelry which I broke trying to get out of my scoop and an unusual ear ring, 24 cents in clad and numerous bullets and sinkers and junk trash. Spent today running errands and trying to do some more research at the public library, but got skunked in my efforts today. Found somebody's glasses, #2 lead weight plus small sinkers. The At/Pro was in rare form and quit on me all of a sudden and wouldn't do anything and I thought I had a problem. It was just the rechargeable batteries
and they were down to one bar and that was all she wrote. Came home and charged them up and put them in and it was working at the house. I was so tired that day, I just didn't bother with changing them at the river and I had to pick up and order that afternoon anyway.
The little dance item sounded mighty low with those metal dots, I call rhinestones. Don't really know what they are, but I was too lazy to change the stock coil and was surprised when it found the smaller leaf jewelry about 6-7 inches deep. Just a little whisper & it was in the scoop. Still haven't taken my GTI-2500 out in the field, but hope to Sunday after church.

Looks like a good day to me. I'd like to be able to just GO hunting some where. I have to work 6 days this week....bummer.
Enough whining, lol. What does a chain sound like? I've yet to run across one, I guess.

Jim, the guy with the PI is a newbie. Actually it's two guys. dgruff, the chain sounds kind of like a trash target sometimes and it's all over the place with the At/Pro especially when it's spread out. DVI can go from high 30's to high 60's on this one. It's not like a can in the water which is high tone, but if you get a signal that goes up and down and it's hard to pinpoint, it could be a chain. I used the coil wiggle in the water when the console is under water, but this day I could actually see the console and DVI under the water. HH. The first chain I found I thought was either a junk target or a good target and junk target together. Once you find your first chain, especially if it's kind of heavy, you'll know the sound.

Hey thanks for the info, fongu, I really appreciate it!
And I was wondering the same thing John...it sure looks like it, lol.

I'm not sure, John. I'd lean more to the nose than the nipple on this one. I've never seen anything like it. Got some type of stone in the middle, probably fake, tho.

I'm crossing my fingers that your chain is gold! Nice collection of goodies in any case. I thought the same as John - that the "ring" came out of a piercing. Ouch.

The chain is not gold. Finally remembered to check it today. Didn't think it was but now I know for sure.

Two rookie questions: what's a PI? How do you teat a metal, I.e., the chain to see if it is gold?

The most common and affordable way to test metal is the acid/scratch test. You make a scratch/mark on a little stone that's like a knife sharpening stone. You then take a vial of acid (and they come in 10k, 14k, 18k and one for silver) and put a drop on the mark you made. If the mark disappears, it's not gold (or a very heavy plate). If it IS gold, you should be able to see your mark very clear. There are also expensive machines that will tell you what it is and how pure. Now silver, that's a little different. The mark you make on the stone is supposed to turn red, but I have a hard time telling, myself. I work in a pawn shop and we quit using the acid test on silver. It got to be too unreliable for all us blind old farts, lol. Nowadays, if it's not marked, we just won't take it.

PI is a pulse induction metal detector. Works lots deeper than regular detector. They say it can find a hair pin at 18 inches. I've never used one myself, but would like to try it. I test initially with a rare earth magnet and then with acid. If the item I'm testing doesn't stick to the magnet, then I check with the acid kit.

Not really. I'd say around 95% of it is usually marked, that we get anyway. And I had such a hard time determining if the mark turned "red" or not, I was glad to see us stop taking it.

Thanks much for the info! 😊

dgruff: Try the 18K acid on silver. It makes easily visible white 'islands' if used on silver.
