Well we thought we could all hop in the van and hit a few yard sales looking for a good buy on a little gold & silver...

[size=large]Having never done this before, we stopped at a half dozen yard sales, 3 second-hand stores and walked through mounds of old cloths, piles of smelly shoes, tons of baby items, tables full of household what-nots and old black & white TV's. I'm here to tell you that the days of going out and making greats buys on gold and silver seems about over; everyone with half a brain knows gold is worth more than life itself and silver now cost an arm and a leg. If you would have been doing this 10+ years ago you'd have been well rewarded. Today, unless you run across a backward Pygmy tribe wearing gleaming gold necklaces and arm bands who are willing to trade them for blankets and whisky, forget about your small front yard sales. Just seemed like struggling people trying to make a buck... Heck, the yard salers were asking us if we had any gold jewelry we'd sell to them!

Now, with that said, there's a poster on the forum here, "Cyberdan" who has written a 40 page book about finding, buying and selling gold and silver, and we have ordered his book. Maybe with his help and insight we will be able to actually make a profit doing this instead of burning up gas. We''ll see and I'll let you know if his insight works and I'm proven wrong. I already have a bit of gold and silver I have found metal detecting and would like to know how best to cash in on it. With silver prices climbing, hitting some older yards can sure net you more than pocket change these days. Sometimes I envy beach hunters... that is until I dig a $10,000 Civil War belt plate!

been there done that--too much driving too little finding. solutions - estate auctions, but you have to use a fair amount of self descipline. I find the auctions listed on line at auction.zip. you can view local auctions and a list of items, then decide to go to it or not. I wont bid on the net, want to see what i'm buying. My best buys were in the bottom of cardboxes boxes full of whatnot usually sold for 1 to 5 $. Got a gold commemerative(.5 troy oz) medal out of a $3 box once. You can look through the boxes before they're auctioned. the boxes usually are auctioned at the end, often many people left by then - except dealers, who are easy to beat as they'll rarely bid more than 50% of the value.

The location mentioned in my previous post is incorrect. Should have been auctionzip.com
