Well the mint is coming out with yet another dollar coin. Don't they ever get wise?

These will sport the busts of different presidents, starting with Washington, and be the same size as the other losers.. What a waste of taxpayer's money. They minted a billion or so of the SACS and you don't see them anywhere except as change in the stamp machines at the POst Office.

Bill

i'm surprised they're not going to make it dime size. maybe they will make it steel so we can't find them either.

They dont seem to get it, do they? Perhaps a presidential bust will change the tide - but I doubt it. What they need to do is do away with the $1 bill.

That's what we did up here, got rid of the one and two dollar machines, and the one and two dollar coins were readily accepted. And, they were welcomed with open arms with the coin operated machines such as food, snacks, gambling etc, because it was getting a little ridiculous for the amount of nickels, dimes quarters etc that had to be put into these machines in order to buy something.

Perhaps that is part of the plan too......

Yeah, without dumping the dollar bill, just a waste of tax dollars cuz it's more convienient to carry bills than coins. But hey, if even a few of 'em get in circulation, they can easily end up in somebody's treasure pouch, at least we can hope!!

Some of the few dollar coins that are out there end up sooner later, lost. I have found a few Sac's, Susan B.'s and even a "Bo Dollar" (Eisenhower) once. And we see all the time how the Loonies and Toonies fare, thanks to our Canadian bretheren.

Put the dollar coin and the bill out of circualtion and there would be a bit of joy in the detectorists world.

But they'll probably hoard them like the SACS. Why don't they makethem the size of the original silver dollars. No way to confuse those suckers for a quarter.

Bill

...while I relaize that these coins may not be used as they might be, I am really lookin forward to the issue of these coins. They are awesome, and really pull together a lot of design features from past coinage.

I also forgot the variety that the US Mint offers us in terms of coins, commemoratives, bullion coins, etc.
Thanks for mentioning it, Bill. Still waving your foot around in front of your desk?

Yeah they are going to mint these coins with the images of several presidents so each lot will be different. The public will hoard them just like the SACS. Wish they would offer some proofs in pure silver.

Bill

that you will see one and two dollar coins replace those notes. It is a trend that is slowly occurring world wide, due to the effects of inflation. We did it here in Oz in the late eighties. Since then, we have also eliminated one and two cent coins from general circulation (in the early nineties) but I gotta tell ya, there is still an awful lot of them showing up under detectors!Who knows; in fifty years they may become sort after targets of a bygone era.:pulltab:
When you do convert to one and two dollar coins, don't say too much, or else the hobby may explode in your face, as some will see this as a lucrative hobby. We already have one or two people in this country that make a living out of this hobby, but I wouldn't like to try it.
In the mean time, chuck some bark chips around them vending machines and make like you are hunting around play equipment!

From the letter I got from the Mint, the coins will start coming out Feb. 2007 into cirulation with Washington being the first. It will be the same size and metal the the Sac. Four will be released each year and I saw somewhere up to the tear 2016 so far. I assume they will offer proofs and Silver coins also as the Mint make a fortune off collectors for these.

One big difference is these dollar coins will have most of the script ( Date, Mintmark, E Pluribus Unumand and In God We trust) on the edges. By doing this I think error coins will be produces in larger quanities, so I plan on watching for errors.

Being the same size as Sac and SB, I don't think alot of people will carry them around. Too many people lost alot of money pulling out a quarter size dollars and using it as a quarter.

Bottom line is the mint made a fortune by people hoarding the 50 State quarters. They had to keep x amount in circulation and with people hoarding them they made more and made more money producing them.

These will be "gold dollars" to avoid confusion and youre right, they will carry script embossed edges. I cant wait!

I was reading all the posts and its very apparent that the real problem is that the mint needs to put a bird(similar to our $1 loonie) or a bear (like our toonie)on the front of the coin. Nobody really cares to collect bird and animal coins here and hence the reason for so many lost coins. In fact our $2 coin is so boring that people analysis it to death. For example most Canadians know if you turn a toonie upside down you will see four seals sitting on an iceburg. Now if you take the same coin and turn it clockwise at 90 degrees you will see the outline of a T-Rex.Now tell me ....why would someone wanna hoard a coin like that ?

Very interesting. Almost makes a trip north worthwhile just to get one or two. What do you think about the fact that you have no 1$ note - does that make a difference?
