Maybe someone can help me with this one <img src="/metal/html/grin.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":grin"> Any takers? (And don't say it's a ring) <img src="/metal/html/lol.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":lol"> It might be upside down to <img src="/metal/html/tongue.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":b">

Same on both sides. The ring is flattened out on the bottom and has "H" engraved inside.

Arabic numbers: 650

We tell my wife those are her initials, and I've got her birthday present covered! <img src="/metal/html/lol.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":lol">

Steve, go back to your link and look again. If they are numbers in Arabic it would be 056, not 650. Am I right or wrong?

But I'm not convinced they are numbers. But I do think we are in the ball park now.

Hi Tony...
Was wondering if this was maybe a Lodge #650? I've seen those guys marching around in Arab get up... <img src="/metal/html/shrug.gif" border=0 width=37 height=15 alt=":shrug">
Showed the symbols to a lady at an Arab corner store earlier this evening and she confirmed that it is very possible that they are stylized Arabic numbers for 650.
That's an interesting design on the side... if it is identical on both sides then I'd guess it has some significant background and not just a random ornament....
All and all, I tend to lean towards your approach... your wife's initials in say, Phonecian or Inuit. <img src="/metal/html/lol.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":lol">

If these are Arabic numbers then 650 would be correct.

...had several Middle Eastern folks look at a pic of the ring, Tony. None seemed to think it was Arabic numbers nor the design either. One suggested Pakistani or Hindu... <img src="/metal/html/shrug.gif" border=0 width=37 height=15 alt=":shrug">

...OK, I give. Check out the link below for a pretty interesting list of alphabets and symbols.
I kinda feel like Clark Griswold after checking all the light bulbs. <img src="/metal/html/shocked.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":shock"> Maybe you should go back and recheck to see if I missed one. <img src="/metal/html/lol.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":lol">

That would be my guess. Don't know what it means. I'll ask my japanese neighbor to check it out tomorrow, but not tonight. It's almost 9:30pm.

...way to go funkyolddude! I think you nailed it.
As you mentioned, Katakana is a Japanese system to phonetically spell out loaned words! No problem recognizing the symbols for HE & RO and the long dash is used to extend the sound.
Way to go! You, sir, are my HE_RO_OO! <img src="/metal/html/clap.gif" border=0 width=20 height=30 alt=":clap">

Wow! I found this incredibly interesting! Japanese packaging will never be the same now. Pretty amazing how different cultures have dealt with the influx of English words. Makes you wonder if there will be an Iraqi equivalent of Katakana in the future?
Anyway, many thank to Tony for posting that nice ring and to funkyolddude for that great catch. <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":)">
Below is a terrific link with lots more info on Katakana.
From the link posted below:
"...Katakana occurs frequently in advertisements; it is also used in writing items that represent something strange or unusual from a linguistic point of view (for example, in quoting foreigners' errors in Japanese); and it is often used in writing onomatopoeic words-i.e., those that are supposed to represent their meaning by their sound (example: gatagata representing a rattling sound). In addition, katakana is used in writing telegrams and, together with ka

...since 'lo' is not part of their language, the character 'ro' is an approximation of the pronounciation of 'lo'.
So, 'hero' everyone.

Aside from the fact that the characters are a perfect match for the Katakana [Japanese] /heroo/ and fit perfectly with the style, there is just no match for the Arabic numerals.
The leftmost character could be the 'eastern Arabic' numeral for 8, not 6, but both 'legs' of the figure are normally the same length. If it were Arabic, which it is not, there would have to be a rational explanation why the form has been modified to conform exactly to the Katakana /he/
In theory, the second character could be the 'eastern Arabic' numeral for 5, but only if you hammer on it to make it look like the Katakana symbol for 'ro'. Normally it is an elongated circle (or the way the Iranians do it, an upside-down 'hearts' shape).
The third character is NOT a numeral, but could be a dash. A zero in the 'eastern Arabic' numerals is ALWAYS a dot, usually stylized to look like a lozenge shape.
For anyone who is curious, the 'western Arabic' numerals are those currently used in Europe: 1234567890
Although both Arabic and Hebrew are written from right to left, the numerals are written from left to right, regardless whether they are of the western or the eastern form.
But the ring is Japanese, guys. Hellooooo ...
