Well, my Sov XS is now ready for some serious hunting!

Those of you who know me over the years know that I can't just let a Sov exist in it's original form without a few modifications and adjustments. Since I've had this baby first thing I did was take off the coil cover to clean any loose dirt or sand (there was NONE!) I then sealed the cover to the coil with white silicone caulk and also did around the coil wire entrance under the coil strain relief to waterproof it the best way I could. I don't plan on any full submersion anyway and will probably get a Tornado 10" or SEF 12X10 down the road for those duties. Next I rear mounted the control box as far back as I could get it. I then wired in the much needed remote all-metal switch in the trigger finger position. Lastly I switched out the sloppy plastic rod clips for metal ones. I'm done for now as I think I will just leave it on the stock rod because it balances out so well. I think the only things I may add is a velcro arm strap for the arm cup and maybe Ron's meter for some more precise park hunting. HH ALL! George

Its looking good George with the mods you have done. I have done several myself with different mods and on the XS I would pick up and resell that has the plug in battery pack. I would use some shrink wrap on the plug so it would cover it with a little over the metal part so the plug wouldn't pull lose. On the XS 2 and the XS2a I would change the drop in batteries to a plug in pack because they are still available and knew I would always have a good connection as the drop in was held tight by the battery door and sometime lose connection as the door would slide lose. I did a couple or bought a few with the remote pinpoint switch which worked great. Those that I didn't
do a remote pinpoint switch I switched the V clip for the control box the other way around so you the controls were right under your arm to make them easy to get at. One more thing I did to those I used that were shaft mounted I got a extension from Plugger
to make the control box even back further to balance much better as I have a S1 probe and a DTI 3 meter on my GT (wonder if this is the one I got from you.)
I never did any mods inside the control box and care full not to buy any either as I feel the Minelab tech had them set for the best performance
, I sent one in to have the mods done and did air test before and after I got it back with the same targets and area and found I lost performance after the mods were done..

Good luck George and hang on to this one if possible as you have one of the best Sovereign made and should serve you well.

Yeah Rick I've decided not to do any other mods internally as I really like to hear the original tones and threshold. I don't want to push my luck messing anything up in there and I am definitely keeping this unit. These XS versions are way too hard to come by nowadays for sure! With the battery plug, I sometimes add some lock-tite or superglue to the threads. Until I do, I make sure to twist it off and on clockwise. After 24 years of using this machine, I know every quirk that comes along with it. I always preferred this battery system the most as well...
