Hey All,,, working on a deal on a used CZ3D (1021) and should have it in a couple weeks. Will be reading all I can about it until then. Currently using a Tesoro Silver uMax, my first MD, and have had great success with it. Actually found a large 14k gold bangle worth about 475 melt value with it to fund my new CZ. Was looking at an Etrac but just could not come up with that much cash and believe the CZ will do as deep and as good a job for me. I hope anyway. Well let me know all about the newbie tricks I need to learn and I'll talk at ya later,,,,Mike
The CZ detectors are still some of the deepest detectors out there today. While I don't own a CZ3D, I do have a CZ5 which is the same detector without the 4 th tone. Also owned the CZ 70 PRO, CZ6A, CZ7A PRO and they were all great detectors but I prefer the adjustability of the analog detectors.
The learning curve is short on the CZ's....here are a few tips that will help you out on your new CZ.
1. Run your disc at "0" and listen to all the tones. This helps to keep the deep square nails from fooling you when they hit high tone. you can hear the iron grunt this way. Impossible to keep from digging some but this will help cut down the number you dig.
2. Always sweep 90 degrees on signals. If it hits at 90 degrees it is a good target. You may want to dig some one way hits to see what they are. CZ's need to be swept slow to get the best depth so slow down and take it easy.
3. No need to run high sensitivity... usually 5 to 7 is fine and still gets deep.
4. Volume boost at settings above 5 really makes deep signals sound like they are shallow. Experiment to see if you like the loud hits on everything or softer hits on deeper targets. I run my volume full bore all the time. Depends on what you prefer.
5. Extra coils like the 5 inch for trashy areas will get almost as much depth as the 8 inch coil. The larger 10 1/2" coil will give you some deep finds but it gets heavy unless you hip mount or chest mount the control box. Large coil seems to be better on deep coins on edge for me.
6. Ground balance.....bobbing the coil is supposed to be a little more accurate, but the push button method is very simple and works fine if you arent used to ground balancing a detector. Experiment and see what works best for you.
7. Make sure you have a good sturdy digger cause you are gonna need it. You are going to be amazed at how deep you dig coins with a CZ detector. Good luck with your new detector.........
Tons of good advice Joe Dirt! Grouser if your looking for a new one I can make you a great deal on one with warranty! Holler if you have questions! Thanks, Bart
Heck lots of knowlegable folks so any questions ask..
Google Mikes CZ page as its a super read for oldie or newbie ....
Seems like the biggest problem I have seen with newbies in years past is the bobbing for ground balance..Manual was written by a tech not a detectorist on this subject..
Simply put volume and sens at max and you will be able to hear to balance spot on...it equates to better depth and stability...after balancing can always lower a facet but never raise a facet as if you do you need to balance again...Around 5 is average for sens. and of course read the manual as volume is your call 10 hear the deepies below 5 it becomes modulated audio(shallow loud-deep soft...
this beast is a little more than I was expecting to get used to,,, so many signals to listen to,,,,,, running my GB at about 3 ( this is my first machine with a manual GB,,, does this mean I am in pretty hot soil?), sens I can't find the sweet spot that shuts this thing up on high tone falses and the iron is killing me,,, some targets give me all four tones from different angles, I get a beep at the end of most of my swings,,, a little different from my beep and dig Silver,,,,,
