Well, It finally happened

I was hunting an old site here in Solvay, NY and I was on village property (probably should not have been here)...I got into the detecting, and without realizing it, strayed onto private property that was still wooded (when your in the woods, it is hard to tell where exactly your at)...All of a sudden, someone grabs me by the back of the collar, spins me around, and points a 9mm in my face...I immediately went for my sharpened digging tool to even the score...I pressed it against the guys ribs and told him to calm down...he told me I was trespassing on private property and I explained to him that I was sorry, but I did not know I had wandered onto his land...I explained what I was doing, and that I did not mean any harm...he finally holstered his gun, as I did the same with my LESCHE...We shook hands, and both agreed to let it stand at that, and not call the cops on each other. I assured him he would not see me on his land again...Where I was is not a great area...A lot of hoodlems hang out up here at night, and he claimed he had a young daughter and he found boys and men up in the woods doing some pretty perverted things while looking down the hill at his house site...I told him I did not blame him for his concern, but next time, his victim might be just as armed as he was, and he may not fair as well as he did with me...I think it gave both of us a good lesson...Him, to let the law handle things, and me, to steer clear of places I should probably not be (even if it is an old site in the middle of the woods)...I tell ya, I am not afraid of weapons...I have handled plenty in the Army, but staring down the barrel of one is no picnic...Stay safe folks...let my lesson be your lesson...

Wow Gopher! That is a very sobering experience. I'm just glad that the incident ended the way it did. You just never know who is out there or what they are capable of doing. It sounds like you ran into a genuine nut case. You don't shove a gun barrel in someone's face because sombody else did something you didn't like. And how threatening is a lone guy (or gal for that matter) with a metal detector that you have to pull a gun on them? "They" are out there guys so watch your back at all times. I for one will start carrying pepper spray and my big survival knife as a backup "digger".

Thanks Gopher for sharing this episode with us. We can all learn from it.

Well, the real lesson is to steer clear of areas you should not be in in the first place...Even though I am in tight with the local Po Po (police), I still should have realized I was close to private property...I had heard rumors of this guy before, and should have known better...His daughter turns out to be like 22, and she is a knockout...the guy has a hangup about any guy even looking in her general direction, and he has found some weird characters on his land doing some nasty things...I hope he learned his lesson from me, and decides to call the cops the next time he sees someone on his land...I am definitely getting a can of pepper spray, or making my own...I have this concoction I call "Chicken Shirt"...It is worse than tear gas...I found this recipe by accident one night when I had a too few many at the local bar and came back home and put a piece of greasy chicken directly on the turntable of the microwave...grease all over, and it had been raining, and I walked home, so I decided to put my nylon shirt in the microwave to dry it...well, the melting nylon mixing with the chicken grease produced some chemical reaction that took the air right out of my lungs, and made your eyes burn terrible...I had to run out of the house and then open all the windows and doors to let this stuff out...If any chemists are on this forum, I sure would like to know what chemicals were involved in this reaction...
To sum this up, stay clear of private lands, because as stated above, there are some wackos out there...This guy was out for blood I think, and had some serious rage issues...He hit me in the nose once, one more time, and I probably would have stabbed him...As it is, he tore the stand off my White's Classic II, and luckily did not tear the screws out so bad that I could not replace them...the detector still works fine...If he had busted it any worse, it would have been on like donkey kong...Being hit in the nose tends to make me see red...

Well GoGoGopher I think when you got clear of that nut, you should have called the police,, even tho you were on private private
property,, by mistake,, The nut don't have the right to stick a gun in your face,, or rough you up in any way,, and the property must be properly posted,,
if this guy was normal he would have let you know he was there,, I'm sure he new what a md is an looks like, an that you were know threat to him,, al so keep in mind the next time it may just be some kids out there playing an he may harm one of them,, that guy needs to be turned in to the police,, that's just my op ion for what it's worth,, Even tho you were wrong,, HE Made the biggest mistake

Turn Him in you were Assaulted It's Not like you were in his front yard, you were in a wooded area Turn him Inn!

Sounds like he may have been protecting more than his daughter. Meth lab? Whiskey still? Marijuana? Poppies? Stolen goods? Who knows what. Any sane person wouldn't be fearful of a guy metal detecting if he didn't have SOMETHING to hide. If he was so concerned about a trespasser he would have called the cops instead of instigating a confrontation which could lead to death or serious injury. The guy is either a genuine mental case or he is crazy like a fox. Just because you were unintentionally on his property doesn't give him the right to threaten your life, rough you up, and damage YOUR property.

Gopher, not trying to tell you what to do but maybe you should report the incident or at least talk to the cops about it so they can keep an eye on this guy. Whatever his problem is he is dangerous.

He's pulls a 9mm, so you pull a lesche to even the score? I'm guessing it wasn't loaded and you called his bluff. Otherwise i'm amazed you're able to share this story with us. It's hard to say what went on in those woods that has this guy so defensive. But, a persons property is just as private as a persons house, and you could probably expect the same results if you were found wandering around inside someone's house. Congrats on still being with us! :starwars:

First...Don't get me wrong here...BUT a gun sometimes comes in real handy! I'm not sure what all the details are concerning gophers ordeal...I have had my own.

I have had to deal with ATV riders smashing down my fences and driving across my land on a utility easment they are not allowed on by law...seems they were doing it illegaly for so long, when I put up the fences, they just "assumed" I was wrong and kept coming through...

Well, the STATE, the BUROUGH, the CITY and the GAS COMPANY are all on MY side so it is OK to fence it off and put up "no tresspassing signs"

Didn't stop them. I actually have "No Tresspassing" signs with tire marks on them!

When I started meeting these idiots at the fence with my sawed-off twelve guage pump, they seemed to "GET THE MESSAGE"! Though one of them still thought I was bluffing and wanted to "test" me. He sez, "That thing LOADED?" I pointed it at the ground and pulled the trigger. It went "BANG" and tore up some real estate. I then said, "Any more STUPID questions?"

The problem is a miniscule part of what it once was. Don't knock us gun owners too much. We have rights, too.

Had not thought about it too hard, but the guy has a path he walks regularly it looks like....He also mows it from what I have seen...So perhaps your right...maybe the guy is doing something illegal up in those woods, and I am just the type to not get mad, but even...Maybe I should call the cops and tell them I saw a whole bunch of pot plants up there...At least it would get them to look into this guy...He also has this path butted right up to some village property as if he is just asking for folks to follow it so he can catch them...Maybe he just gets off on threatening people...
