Couldn't take it anymore, had to grab the F70 and go. The wind chill came up from 7 to 10 F and there was a slight skiff of snow on the ground, with more falling from the sky. I did not bag the 11" coil but should have as it balled up with snow and got heavy. Lake is icing up...

I got permission to hunt a lakefront Catholic Retreat home that is closed and for sale after 60 years...they figure there has been @100,000 people out here retreating from something...evidently, all 100,000 of them took a vow of poverty since I found only one coin and it was a 70's something Q...I found a rotten potmetal crucifix medallion, a few old shotgun shells, and all the signs that said there should be some old silver, lots of iron nails, junk etc...dont know how come it was so coin poor with that many folks allegedly attending...even went into the water for nothing but old paper lowbase shotgun shells, good sign for old silver, but not a peep...danged old priest crept up on me while I was detecting in the howling wind, up around the base of big old oaks..he was wearing sandals! :surprised: musta been a Jesuit?. Frost is down 1" in the clear, but easy stabbing in the cover or thick sod.
I went over to the local high school and swept up a few more Q's, a couple of N's and a few P's...no big stellar day or finds, still fun though, cant find anything sitting around in the house, I'll take one more GOLD for the year...I tried to take a picture or two outdoors stabbing deep sod targets through the snow, but my phone evidently froze up too on account I could not get it to operate...just a white apple was on the screen...

Anybody find anything worth a tinkers cuss this weekend? This arctic cold really came down fast this year.

Man you got the detecting bug "BAD" ........

I knew you would be out there.:detecting: Gotta be bold to get the gold, even though it's downright cold. HH jim tn

Hey Mud,
I think they all came here to vacation at the beach after they finished spending their mad money at the lakefront retreat! BLNT
Tomorrow is another day!

Mud you are a real diehard. I stayed in because it was a tad cold and misting rain out even though I have a hot place to detect.

Thanks guys...today we had a good blizzard with gale force winds..I went and bought some tube sand and got new tires on the magnum,:rage: I also bought a NEW Finds pouch for 77cent and a set of alligator clips for 89 cent, then came home and made an electrolysis machine out of an old phone charger and cleaned up some silver rings and coins. worked great!..My old 77cent finds pouch has lasted for 3 years, but its all dirty and torn up, strings all frazzled and ready to go...they are just those cheap canvas nail pouches from the lumber yard, but they work allright. I priced a new screwdriver for stabbing for 1.89, but backed off, maybe I'll get one for Christmas?

You ain't kidding he has it bad! When he says lake is icing up, he means the big one, not your local back yard pond.....lol. I was going to take the family out to the pier to fish for Whitefish, but it was just too cold with the wind chill...

TH, I doubt those steelheaders would have even attempted to walk the pier today...but, as you know, thats part of the thing...do you pull up the Grand Haven Surfcam and have a look before you go? Or even the muskegon webcam is helpful to give you temp and wind direction...a good place for whitefish is over by the Silversides...heck, a fellow can park right next to the rail and stay in the car for the most part!
Mud

yes they are poor all the money is in the collection basket.

I have never went Whitefish fishing, but was planning on going by Silversides. Nice to know it's close to a parking spot!

Way to hang in there mudd.
I was out Dec 5 mainly for scouting since it was cold but no snow yet in central IA. Found some great spots that had deep coins left. My last dig was a semi key date Indian-head from 1909 a little better than good condition.

Took some pitchers of a city park employee catching a well deserved tax payer napp at a park, he was sitting in a brand new pickup with it idling to stay warm. After I blew the horn to wake him up I let him know I had photos and that he was getting zero miles per gallon while idling tax payers trucks.

The look on this guy's face was priceless.:yikes:

Me and a buddy when out today for about two hrs. in low 30's to balmy 40's . I hit a tot lot with Amigo II came up with 51 cents before school let the little monkeys out to play in city park tot lot I was detecting bummer!!!! had to leave. Did manage a junk ring, it read nickel on my buddy's XLT. We haven't called it quits yet here in VA.

Way to go Mud -- I was out yesterday and thought it was cold, but I guess I was hunting in a heat wave compared to you. One nice thing about hunting cold and early is you don't see the competition and fewer people bugging you. I did find a nice silver ring, and 14 quarters,, 16 dimes, blah, blah --- don't you love it? I had a hard time talking to my hunting partner, snot was dripping from his nose -- very distracting. :crylol: Finding all those shotgun shells proves what Obama said must be true -- you know, the comment about religious people -- bibles and guns, ya think?

dbax,
That's a cool looking ring.........looks like a ring inside a ring!......what's up with that?

And, Mud, you gotta be out of your mind! I lived in the U.P. for 5 winters, I know what cold is. It got down to about 40 degrees here and I stayed in! Now, at my age, I go by the 50/50 rule, it has to be at least 50 degrees and less than a 50% chance of rain before I go......otherwise, my "Arthur" starts complaining! Sorry you didn't get the gold, but, hang in there....it will still be there in the spring!
