Well I just got a bit of bad news

I suffered a rotator cuff injury close to 3 months ago and between xrays, MRI's, I finally got in to see Orthopedic surgeon. Unfortunately, he informed me that my rotator cuff had ripped in half and retracted. He said he can do surgery, but there is a big possibility they can't fix it because usually two Centimeter tears can be fixed, but mine is between 4-5 cm. But they can at least go in drain off the fluid and clean it up a bit. I elected not to do the surgery, I've lived with the pain for 3 months, no since adding insult to injury if they can't fix it. So long story, not so long, my metal detecting days may have come to an end.

Not so quick !!!! I suffered a MAJOR rotator cuff tear several years ago falling down a set of stairs, Went to Ortho for MRI. Results, big tear, bursitis, tendonitis, arthritis, blah blah blah.
Dr said 'At your age' (not saying :) surgery may not work !!!! Went to PT for a couple of weeks, learned the exercises. Then set up a pulley system in my basement, Didnt practice too much but over time my shoulder has healed by itself. Its not 100% but it certainly is still quite functional for metal detecting. You need to modify your swing. When very painful, I would just twist from the waist, side to side. I could lift my arm more than a few inches off my waist. Thankfully I own a Deus, so that really helped with swinging.

It will take time but the body is a miraculous machine !!! Pop some Advil or Tylenol before an outing. Careful as these drugs are not good for liver. Couple now and then shouldnt be too harmful.

Patience and over time it will get better,

HH

Thanks D, My primary Dr. Set me up with another Ortho for a second opinion. I'm living on Tylenol for the past three months.
I have been dealing with a torn Rotator cuff since 2007, i am 65 now, elected to not have surgery but as @Donna(NJ stated over time the pain will ease, learn to swing with the other arm and continue on with this great hobby, do not give up, where there is a will there is a way

My rotatory cuff injury is more than a tear, it ripped it right off the bone. I hate every time I go and see a doctor about it, or get xrays, or MRI, they ask how did it happen? I got to where I started telling them it was injured while I was defending the honor of a damsel in distress rather than the true story, which is, I fell of my riding mower.

Ouch!!!----I feel for you man----I feel sorry for ALL of you people that are having these kind of problems.----It's no fun---I messed up my right arm/shoulder a couple of days ago.----Don't know yet the extent of the damage but---my goodness is it painful & keeping me up of nights.----Reminds me of a major tooth ache in the shoulder area.

Looks like you need to see an orthopedic as well. That's the same thing I've been feeling for 3 months.

I've found laying on the opposite side and putting a small pillow under the arm throbbing helps a great deal with sleeping.
Been dealing with it for decades.

A simple exorcise of starting with your arm hanging down holding a Light weight.
Bringing your arm up into a curl while raising the arm overhead to straight up and if possible without bad pain over center to the rear as a stretch. I do this under and overhand. Sideways too while curling the wrist up and down throughout the main movement.
Like an overhead press.
Coming up angling left or right to pull in more muscles. Carefully

Like 1-2lbs or less. Eventually I worked upto 10lbs.

Roll of pre 64 pennies. Buffalo knickles.
Roll of Mercury dimes. Silver quarter's or half's.
Present a nice little weight.
And they don't instantly lose their value when you leave the store like weights.
Plus when you're feeling better.
You can throw them out in the yard and go detecting.

Back from second opinion, he recommended reverse shoulder replacement down the road, but was willing to give me pain management with steroid injections in my shoulder as needed.

Becareful with Cortisone. Too much can cause more damage. Do some reading about it. Cortisone does nothing for me,
Too many broken parts and nothing really helped except Advil. That's no good for you either !!!!

Check out PT on *Tube for shoulder issues.

I feel your pain.....Pillow trick will help a lot.
