Well, I Agonized About Whether To Go To The Beach Last Night Or Not...

And I wound up going and glad that I did.

Hit the surflane for the 12:45 low tide. Got out there at 11:15 and hunted until about 1:15. There were no other hunters there. There were darn few targets there. And then I hit a pretty hot area...coins everywhere. It was right at about 12th street, in the wet sand about 15 feet from the water. By the time I started to see the targets die down, the place looked like the golf course on CaddyShack when Bill Murray was trying to get that gopher...holes EVERYWHERE! And out of the midst of it, I pulled a silver ring and a gold and diamond ring. There are 3 small diamonds in the 14K setting. The silver ring actually says "800" in it...first time I've seen that. I guess the didn't have enough silver for a 925 ring, huh?

Anyway, the surf god hit me one more time. It was pretty darn cold out there and major windy. Here's the pic:

Well, the beach is a lot flatter, that's for sure. I don't believe we got any helpful movement, for the most part. I got lucky with one hot spot. There may be more, but it's very scarce overall. Still, there's no doubt that there are some good finds left out there.

WED/THURS WERE THE BEST DAYS. SOME GUYS PULLED A LOT OF OLD SILVERS AND A FEW RINGS.I GOT ONE GOLD SOME WHEATS/BUFFALO'S LOTS OF CLAD.THEN IT GOT KINDA FLAT THE SHARP CUTS GOT ALL LAID OUT IN THE FLAT COVERING MOST OF THE GOODIES! BUT WE GOT 50 MPH GUST COMING SUN THIS MAY BE A GOOD THING!! GOOD LUCK IN VA BEACH!!!LOVE YOUR PHOTOS!

Thanks, Beach!

Yeah, i think the beach thing is almost over for me. Soon I'll be making the switch to land. Actually going to do some tomorrow, though I will probably be back out to the beach now and then. But not likely at night much now...getting a bit chilly out there.

Saw this on the web:

Perhaps the 800 means its about 20K gold?

Quality Marks on Karat Gold Jewelry
Karatage Karat mark European marking Percent pure gold
Ten-karat 10K 417 41.7%
Fourteen-karat 14K 585 58.5%
Eighteen-karat 18K 750 75.0%
Twenty-four karat 24K 999 99.9%

It's possible, but it looks like silver and it sounds more like silver, though it is a thin band, so it's not typical of the silver sound. I think it's silver though. I've never seen an 800 mark either way though. Here's a chart I like that lists what you were referring to.

Hmm...well although I have probably found close to 100 rings...gold, silver, titanium, junk...I have yet to find a platinum ring. And that WOULD explain why it sounds somewhere between gold and silver on my Excal. Because I can almost always tell gold and I can always tell silver but this one had me wondering.

I would LIKE it to be platinum, I'm not sure about the "800" being a platinum marking. I suppose it COULD be, but from what I have read, the lowest platinum designation should be 850 and should be marked "plat" or "pt". Here is a link that speaks to that:

http://www.guide2jewelry.com/platinum/index.asp?id=7&p=3

Then again, in this link, they do show an 850 and a 585 platinum, so I guess you could see 800. http://www.professionaljeweler.com/archives/articles/1998/apr98/0498fp1.html

Now according to THIS link, if it's platinum, it has to SAY "platinum", "Plat", or "pt" on it and it also needs to be followed with the purity number. My ring is not marked that way.

http://jewelry.about.com/od/platinumjewelry/a/platinum_faq.htm

But I will have somebody who knows look at it to be sure.

Platinum can come in 800, 850, 900, 950 and 1000. The numbers show you the percentage of pure platinum in a ring. Like 900 = 90% pure platinum. Yes, most platinum rings does have "platinum", "Plat", or "pt" on it. But I have seem them with only P and a number on it. I have around 50 platinum wedding rings at the present time. Please post when you find out what your ring is. The 585 platinum rings are something new. I have not found one yet and to be honest. I hope that I do not. To me the 585 number should only be on 14K gold items.

...I also tried to find out what the 800 mark was (no platinum mark). I found more mention of a silver mark of 800. However, using an X-1 on the Exp II, the reading is 14/15 ferrous and 00 conductivity so it certainly doesn't sound like silver.

I think i've seen Mexican silver that is 800, plus according to my search, german silver after 1888 was marked as 800. Nice finds.
