I dug a completely unrecognizeable blob of rust out of a Civil War fire pit about a year ago. Not knowing what the piece was, I put it in the 'junk' box with the intention of throwing it into the electrolysis or zinc/lye someday to see what it was. Well, I was putting some more unrecognizeable blobs in the box a few days ago and noticed the rust seemed pretty loose. I flaked the rust off, and now I have a very clean unrecognizeable iron item. It's about 15 3/4" long and 3/4" wide, with the flat portion being 9 1/4" long. Any ideas what this thing may be??? Also, any suggestions on what would be preserve this relic? HH-Sarge

Here's something similar....from a CW camp in Fairfax, VA.

it may have been used to hang a pot or something on. Some of this stuff is neat, but completely baffling!
