The weather was perfect for detecting in my opinion. The ground was just as soft as could be under the snow We get in the woods turn on the AT PRO start detecting. After about 20 minutes the PRO goes hay wire!!!!! VDI's start bouncing all over and the screen going crazy. depth meter showing MAX. noisy all over, BUT I still can here a target when I go over one. I turn it off for a bit then back on and about a minute later it goes hay wire again. I deal with it and about 15 minutes after that it's working fine! I even went back to the spot it first went hay wire and this time it's working fine. We go to another area of the woods and BAM hay wire again. I detect with the noise and after a bit it settles down and works fine. I almost did a video of it, but figured I could not figure out how to post a video on the web site. I plan on switching out 8.5" X 11" coil from my Gold next week and see what happens. I will take a video next week if it goes hay wire again and I will send it with the detector back to Garrett. I'm statring to get frustrated with it and loosing confidents carrying it all the way in the woods and it NOT working right.. I love the detector when it's working right. I'm trying to keep the FAITH!!!!

I think its time Garrett just replace your AT Pro with a new one. I was thinking of getting one in the late spring but with some of the problems that people are writing about I may hold off.

I think it may be a defective coil. Why? You have noticeable issue. Turn machine off. Problem goes away for a while, then returns. Problematic search coils can temporarily reset when machine is reset. Don't feel like typing a long technical explanation why. But yes, do send it & the coils for a thorough check-up. Do try another coil in same area you had issue, and post results here.

I hope it's something simple like a bad battery. That can make it sound like that. Good luck Joe. Nice to see someone hunt in the snow. :)

One thing to remember is the ratio of problems to units sold. From what I have heard from several dealers the percentage of problem units (the new versions) to numbers sold is about the same as the other makes and models they sell. They are selling a lot of AT-Pros.

I had to send mine in with a ground balance issue. It was four months old and they installed an upgraded board and replaced my large coil which had gone out of spec. The other two were fine. The turn around from shipping it to receiving it looks like it's going to be 10 days. That's fantastic service. I'll bet if i have to send my E-Trac in I won't get service like that!

Hi John,
I put fresh batteries in the night before. I just love digging in snow. It's a bit tough when you have about 6 to 10 inches on the ground though. LOL But that does not stop me!!! I'm going to switch out coil from my GOLD next week and see what that does.

MINE DID THAT IN THE LAST PART OF A HUNT OF A HUGE DRY LAKE. I GAVE UP AND LEFT. DROVE HOME A LONG WAYS, AND IT'S NEVER DONE IT AGAIN. I FELT LIKE WRAPPING IT AROUND A TREE, LOL. HH-MARK

Mine did the same thing last week when I turned it on. A few minutes later it worked fine. But it has happened to me a few times in the past with both the large and small DD coils. Maybe next time I'll send it in for repair.

HI guys, mine has done the same thing about 3 times the last time I was water hunting and it started I tried every thing and finally I put the beach scoop to it about 2 times and it went back to normal I have found a 14k ladies bracelet and a mans 10k bracelet 3 .925 rings and 2 junk rings in this swimming hold still have a lot of area to hunt. This area has a ton of pulltabs and bottle caps but I am digging all good repeat sign.

I have heard that even if you are not talking on your cellphone it can interfere w/ your detector.

I don't know if anyone has tried to test this, but I have "heard" that, when a cellphone temporarily loses signal, it "searches" for a new signal, and once acquiring one, settles back to normal mode.

If a cellphone temporarily loses signal and goes into a search mode, I would think that could cause some interference, but I'm just guessing.

Maybe its the solar storms that we are having. http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2012/01/120124-solar-storm-geomagnetic-auroras-flights-sun-earth-space-science/

Sounds like moisture in the coil to me. I had one of my other detectors act that way and under a magnifying glass I located a tiny hairline crack in the coil. Replaced the coil and everything was ok. Onus

Where are you at in Maryland Joe? Im in Hagerstown.

Well it looks like a BAD coil. I took the 8.5 X 11 coil off my AT GOLD and used it with my AT PRO this weekend and NO PROBLEMS all day. Must be a crack in the coil. Looks like I'll be in the market for a new 8.5 X 11 coil. I found some nice stuff today and will post them tomorrow. To tired right now. LOL

Should be covered under warranty. They just replaced mine.
