Well detecting?

Fabio

New member
Here's one for the bucket:
Did anyone here ever do some detecting in water wells, maybe with magnets or by video inspection?
There are a few very old deep abandoned wells in my area, and was wondering if it was worth checking them out.

I detected all around an old well that must have supplied water for cattle at one time. It still had water and junk in it and I did fish a magnet around but only pulled up a couple rusty bits of iron. Did not find much around the well either. I always intended to go down it when it dried up but forgot all about it during the record heat wave we just experienced. Thanks for the reminder and be careful if you go down an old well. At least bring a buddy who can point out there you were last seen if it collapses on you. Can be very dangerous.

Just heard yesterday about someone finding a huge number of unfired 3 ringers that were dumped into a well.

And the list goes on relative finding treasure...Indeed do be careful and bring a friend along if you get into trouble as dangerous at best....

Around old wells, in fields, some of my favorite detecting. Have checked down in a few and found junk and animal bones. One thing I don't like is finding those old wells by accident. Luckily haven't fell to the bottom of one yet. Be carefull and good luck.

Hi Fabio, Yeowee, and sho-nuff about the dangerous warnings the guys are speaking of. And with you knowing your area has lots of old wells, you are probably aware of the danger already. That would cause me concern and caution to watch closely for those old abandoned wells that are not known but are yet hiding under some means of long ago precaution now neglected. I was standing close to a hunting buddy one day when he fell almost totally into an old covered well. The old tin covering it had brushed over and rotted and had he not reached out and grabbed a small bush he would have been gone from sight. As for retrieveing things from old wells, I think there is probably some type of Latch/Bucket type device that is used to retrieve soil samples from river and lake bottoms that may be found. May work ok so long as you don't get the rig hung up and not be able to raise it. Seems I saw such a rig when I had Ideas of "dragging" for goodies from an old snake infested swim hole. HH, Charlie

The one I might check out is so full of trash, it'll be a miracle if I manage to get a magnet down deep enough without getting it attracted beforehand... Perhaps I could just use a heavy rope and hook, and just yank out all the junk I can. Then, maybe the well could present some interesting finds... It goes back about 160 years, near an abandoned railway line. A very weird place to dig a well, especially since it's on the side of a small mountain... My guess it was just a ground well set up to hold water for the steam train that once passed by there. The well is at a tiny train station, or should I say, depot.
