Weirdest find Help

I found a coin/button?? down in Long Island on the adt hunt, and knew it had some letters on it but did not know exactly what it said. It is a large copper disc bigger than a large cent and has an impression on one side that almost looks like a sheild. This impression is why all the other guys down there thought it was a button. But I'm still not convinced. Well this thing has been bugging me and I have been cleaning it for a few days now. It is very green underneath a thin brown crust. I started with soap and water and a tooth brush, and moved on to boiling peroxide and using a cotton swab after soaking it in the peroxide bath. This helped, but not enough. So now I have it in olive oil and it seems to be bringing out some more detail. But let me tell you this thing is weird. It is not fully legible, but this is what I have so far.

Side of coin thing with the stamp in center-
modera lendeat+vs

Other side-
petrvsudgportv

Now these are big bold capital letters that go around the outside of the coin thingy. These letters are all consecutive except wher I have the space between the modera and the lendeat. There is more but haven't cleaned it up enough yet and not sure if it will. Would be very interesting to hear your guesses. I have a feeling this thing has some significance to it, although you would think it would have been made out of some more precious metal like silver.

Sorry pics not the greatest

I think I've solved your mystery. On one side should read: MODERATO * SPLENDEAT * VSV (date +-1699) and a counter-stamped "shield" over a large XX. On the other side: PETRVS II . D . G . PORTVG R D ETHIOP and a "crown and shield" in the center. The coin originated from Portugal (PORTVG) under Peter II (PETRVS II) in the late 1600s. It was a 20 Reis coin (XX) that was raised in value at Brazil in 1809 with the shield counter-stamp. This may have raised it's value to 40 Reis. That's an interesting find and it was fun to research. Got anything else that interesting? The attachment has a pic of a clean coin.

Any finds from the 1600's is a killer find in the US.....
