Weird stuff with the 705 today

The day started out ok. After hunting an hour I noticed my 705 wouldn't hold a TID. It would bounce all over. I decided to dig a couple signals and sure enough they where coins. I rescanned the hole and nothing else was there. I have never had this happen before. I wonder how many good targets I dismissed as trash. I did the factory reset and tightened the cable and cleaned the coil guard and it settled down some what. Then I got a ripping 48. Small size so I dig it and it's a quarter. I get a 40-42(normally a quarter) and it's a wheat penny. I have no idea what's going on. It has new batteries. I really hope it isn't broken. I was running the digger 6" 3khz and getting high TID last week but today was with the stock 7.5 kHz 9" coil. Sens, thresh, and gb all status quo.

One question, just for more info. Did you happen to auto noise cancel when it "went nuts"?

It was the first things I did. I hunt a farm that has an electric fence so I assumed it might be noise. The area we hunted today has no electric lines around unless they are under ground.

Typical EMI from an electric fence is a pulse, which often does cause high tone falsing, but I've not known it to skew ID numbers.
Was there any fence nearby? I have noticed that it can collect stray charge and have an effect even though it's not hot. I've hunted areas like that, where I could turn around putting myself between the fence and the coil and it made a difference.

Beyond that, I would do another complete reset. Presets and everything. Start out with as clean a slate as possible.
Then if it still does it, make the call to Minelab (a real call, not e-mail). A service tech might have something else to try to determine whether there's a need to send it in or not.

I would have redid the auto noise ... maybe something came on somewhere

Electric fences kill me . My detector will not settle down round them unless I am using the 3khz 9inch coil. One farm I hunt I get interference with my 10.5 coil from about 500 yards away. I have to back the sensitivity way own around them. I have dug several wheats that gave ids in the forties.

There are no fences in the areas I hunted today. I was on an old school site that is now soccer fields and in a remote park. There are power lines several hundred yards away but not high tension lines. The strange thing is once the coins were dug and I air tested them they hit exactly as they should. I was the only one having issues. The other guys had an etrack and an f75 with no issues. Strange. It seems to be operating in the back yard as it is supposed to now. I will let you know what happens tomorrow. Man I hope I don't have to send it in but I guess if I did now would be the best time.

If the coins gave you the proper TID after they were dug, and both readings were taken at the same site, the difference is likely coming from the detector's relationship to the ground. If that is the case, I'd suggest you were operating with an improper ground balance, your sensitivity was set too high, or both. Try the same site using Tracking mode. If it is still not quite right, try implementing a bit of negative GB offset. If adjusting the GB doesn't remedy the situation, try lowering the Sensitivity. JMHO HH Randy

I have a question, is their any frost in the ground,,, even just a lil bit???

I noticed that the numbers will jump a round pretty bad when their is any frost in the ground and I'm using the 10.5 DD 7.5 coil

My brother in law had to send his detector back after detecting near an electric fence. This may have just been a coincidence with what you are going through but I kind of question that after reading your post.

He had his detector for a few months with no abnormal operation and one day he was detecting a farm site and detected within a foot or less of a charged fence and is positive that he did not directly touch the fence or poles. All of the sudden he started getting very erratic readings and nearly every target he would hit would give him a double or triple beep unlike a single beep with swiping back and forth over a target.

We had him check the connections and do every reset listed in the manual and it was not any better. He sent the controller and the 5x10 coil back to Minelab and they replaced the controller. I'm not sure that they ever listed the cause of failure but he has not had a problem ever since. Needless to say he has stayed away from properties with electric fences.

EMF, RF & EMI can cause all kinds of havoc with many types of circuits and equipment, most of which can only be diagnosed while the interference is happening. In my book, after two known examples of something like this happening, I'd say that's enough reason to try and avoid this situation but I'm sure there are people on here that have never had any problems in this situation.

Tried it today with different coils same result. No stable TID. Swing one direction I would get a 44 return swing a 38. X the target and get a 46-48 the other directions. Dig it up and its a clad penny at 4 inches. Turned the sens down to 15 same thing. With the sensitivity at 8 I got a solid signal 46,46 at 3 inches another clad penny. I will be giving minelab a call in the morning. I hope this doesnt take long.

Bummer!
Not that it will make you feel better, but I bet I can count on my fingers the number of Xterras that I've heard of that had major problems. They typically are solid trouble free machines.
If you bought it new, depending on the dealer, it might be worth contacting them before Minelab. Either way you should be squared up within a couple weeks.

I mentioned soil conditions in my previous response because you said it worked fine in air testing. Before you send it in for servicing, make sure you are obtaining a proper ground balance. Then, give it a shot in Tracking, if you haven't already. And if your soil is highly mineralized, TID numbers can become less accurate. Especially if you aren't consistent in your sweep speeds. For areas with high levels of mineralization, you will get more accurate TID numbers by implementing TID Stability. It may well be a problem with your detector....but it would be worth the few minutes it takes to check out these other things, before you send it back for service. JMHO HH Randy

Another thing,,, is this happening at several different places or at just one place. If it's happening at the same place and not other places I'm betting the ground is really hot at that one place

First, Thanks for your help and suggestions everyone. Randy I did try and GB and ran it with a shift in both a + and - offset with the tracking on. It worked better yesterday. I have been using the 705 since March and it is amazing how versatile it is. It is still off, and the depths are also off but it "settled down" some what. The hunt sites are the same ones I have hunted many times in the past. It amazes me how I can hit a spot and think its cleaned out hit the exact same area and with changing soil moisture and atmospheric conditions or a different coil and setting on the detector manage to find things that are missed previously. I dont know if the cold and moist conditions are making the 705 go nuts or what. I am going to talk to Minelab as soon as they re-open after the holiday. When using the concentric stock 7.5khz 9" coil and air testing I noticed the only way to get a consistent TID the target has to hit dead center of the inner coil. If its just slightly off center the # drops or raises. It seems to be more critical than when I first bought the machine.

Did you find out what the problem was with your 705? If not while in tracking hit the GB button and see if it is below 28, this happened to me i was running anywhere from 7 to 19 bought a 5x10 DD coil 18.75 and the 705 works like a charm now.
