Weird rock signal, any ideas?

I was hunting a area where a small town used to be along with a old Silver Smelter, I bent down and looked at some of the odd rocks and they where very heavy for their size so out of curiosity i put my coil over a few of the rocks and had a flat signal from the rocks but no VDI came up, i got the coil right on it and it freaked out saying Lift coil/ turn gain down.......i switched to prospecting mode and it wouldnt give me and sign of what it might be but it did make the same noise as in relic mode.
What experts know what this is called? and what might the rocks contain to send it off?

Not an expert, but I would guess some type of metal/iron in the rock. Can you post a picture of the rock like JiminSD asked? That would tell us what type of rock you were on. HH, Nancy

You might have answered your own question. If there was a Silver Smelter, I bet your rock is Silver ore. Here is a link to help identify it:

Ill be heading back out soon to this site and ill bring a rock home, i usually do bring weird rocks of interest home and my fathers work has a scanning gun that will list every trace of metal in it, but i remember them being very heavy for the size.
once i get out their again ill be sure to get some photos

One other thing for the rock expert, i picked up a story from a "old boy" in town who had 2 brothers who started mining for gold in one of our least expected canyons for anything like that but he told me where they lived at the time but wasnt sure if anything was found or not.
I have hiked the 30 mile canyon and i have always had some gut instinct about the old river bed and the different minerals ive seen and something dont quite seem right, so when i heard this story it helped with my curious hunch, it such a unknown canyon to a lot of people here in utah but my question is...... whats the best type of minerals to look for when looking for gold? whats a key sign of a possible gold strike.
Thanks for the help

It could be hot rocks or iron stone. If hot rock, throw in bushes and keep detecting. Both are common in AZ, NV, nothern CA and OR. With the MXT, one can ground balance over the iron stone and then you might be able to pick up a nugget underneath it.....
