Weekends finds

Ken (Australia)

New member
Hi all, went out over the weekend to a couple of different spots. The first was an old farm ruin, nothing left only the stone foundations in the ground. Spent all day and could not come up with one coin. Plenty of cartridge cases, bits of lamps, horseshoes, stirrups etc. Found the dump and had a dig for an hour or so, plenty of bottles but all broken, about 1880's I'd say. Have attached photo of my keepers, a religious medal, token advertising Alex Ferguson Highland Whiskey Glasgow and a couple of round buckles, probably horse gear. Second photos shows afernoons finds from one of the local primary schools, best were a shilling, sixpence and penny. Lately I've been using all metal mode and all the coins I'm interested in, English copper and silver and Australian pre decimal copper and silver come up between 30 and 40, although if the coins have been in the ground a long time or are deep they will also display between -1 to -10.

Looks like some nice keepers. That old homesite - probably has more good stuff. My mother's 1800's home my son and I put in many hours(30+) before we came up with the good stuff. There was just so much iorn in the ground that once we got it out of the way we started finding better stuff. Just yesterday I dug a monster piece of iorn and then next to where I dug I found a Silver Civil Air Patrol pin(will post later today or tomorrow). Good luck at the site.

Nice finds Ken! Now if I came across a bottle dump to find all the bottles broken, I would've cried! I love my old bottles. What a shame they were broken. How deep did you dig. Are you aware that, when bottles were buried, sometimes there's a false bottom, and if you dig down further, there's another hoard to be dug? Perhaps there's more buried in that hole, under the broken ones. From the last post you sent of those wonderful old sites, I was wondering how you were going detecting there!

Hi Angela. I always dig right to the bottom and then some just to make sure. I wasn't too disappointed. All the bottles were plain with no embossing, although it's still nice to dig a few intact. Two of those homes in the previous post have been demolished so I'll have to go back and have another look, I did get a number of pennies and half pennies dating back to 1863 and my mate who also has a Quattro got an 1853 threepence. We're going out next week to an old quarry site that has a number of workers cottage sites attached that dates back to the 1860's. I've already been there about 12 months ago and found coins ,the paddocks since been ploughed so we'll have another look at it.
