Weekend Relic Finds

Got out to Petersburg this weekend for a few hours and found 19 bullets and a coin of some sorts. The coin is so worn you can't make out anything, almost looks like a flat button without a backing. Tarheel - sorry I didn't call, but the heat and lack of wind whipped my butt. The picture is actually a total for two Saturdays, or about 10 hours of hunting.

Question - What do you all do about walking into spider webs? I hate'm.... must've rubbed a layer of skin off with the rag I was using to get the critters off. I guess I spend too much time looking down, but you get tired swinging your detector 6 feet in the air between every tree you between... If you'd see me out in the woods you'd crack up, imagine a 40 year old guy freaking and beating his head when a big spider attached to his web gets plastered to my face...

Skip, Get a mesh head piece at a sporting goods store. The kind you would wear for archery hunting. you can see through it and the spider webs will not bother you. They are fairly cheap but worth it.

Congrats on some great finds. I was wondering what state you're in. I'm getting ready to go south and am trying to put together some possible places to relic hunt for CW artifacts. If you'ld rather, i could give you my e-mail address and you respond there. I'd appreciate some input for a Yankee to come down and have a chance to find some places to hunt without trouble. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Dan. XLT

Dan,

I'm a yank in the south, but have been here long enough to be considered a local boy. I live in Virginia beach and hunt mainly in the Petersburg area. I do occasionally hunt in the Suffolk area too. With Petersburg being the longest siege in the Civil war its still a pretty good place to relic hunt. But like most of the Civil war city area's in Virginia the Confederate lines protecting the city are mostly gone from either Malls or houses, and of course Battlefield park. I do have about 25 acres that I have permission to hunt on, and most of it is woods or swampy area's.

I'm currently in the Navy, but will be retiring in about 5 months to probably move back to the Western New York area. I will be taking road trips every other month to get my relic fix in, I've grown to love the history of Virginia and its a shame I didn't recognize it the first 10 years residing in this state.

Went this weekend on Saturday and found 14 bullets, ended up losing my gps so I had to come back on Sunday to find 15 more bullets and luckily my gps. If you'd see the thick woods I was in you'd be amazed too. I'll post the bullets either today or tomorrow.

Funniest thing is coming across two turtles doing the nasty, I'll post that picture too.

Nice collection of finds in spite of the spider webs! Have you figured out what type of coin it is?
