Weekend hunts

Did some hunting at a camp retreat and my own property this weekend. At the Camp retreat I used the Tesoro V and found some bullet shells and some clad, nothing to brag about. Used the Bounty Hunter on the playing field since I did not want to go deep and was just looking for coins and jewelry. Nothing exciting except in one hole I found 5 clad quarters. The next day a took a small woods hunt with my dogs on my own property. I found 2 shotgun shells ( Federal Monark and Winchester Super Speed) but then got a strong signal near a big river beech tree. It gave a signal of high conductivity like copper or silver. So I dug down about 10 " but rocks were in the way. It still gave a good signal with both my Vaquero (high clear tone) and then I used the Bounty Hunter to check the tone and it was nonferrous. I was pretty close as the pinpointer was going crazy. Still don't know what it is as it was getting dark and couldn't feel it or see it. I probably need to go in with a crow bar or pick ax to try to get thru the roots and rocks. My guess is it will be junk but it has got my interest up.

I have left deep targets several times. I travel light even in the woods , usually no spade , and just have to give up.

It's probably a hoard of silver and gold coins that someone buried at the base of that tree. You'll never know until you dig it up.

When digging in parks i do not dig deep holes, But there right, in the woods i bring a small pick and a folding shovel. That could be hidden treasure. Diging is the only way to find out.

at the base of a big tree, ??????"""""" you bet it maybe worth your wile to check that out . the one and only good thing I found in the woods I am hunting was at the base of a big ash tree 90 year old ash tree it was a nice token

Gunnar is right when it comes to looking next to trees.

A hunter will sit with their back to a tree when they're hunting deer, turkey and squirrel. Things fall out of their pockets.

Also people bury things next to a tree so they can find it again.

A big old river beech is interesting...lots of the loggers around here seemed to leave the beech trees, so they are pretty big and old, couple of hundred years I reckon....it would be a good place to stash something, since those big beechs are easy to find again..

I think you should just forget about going back to dig it up. Who cares if it is a jug full of very old coins. Maybe worth thou$and$ of dollar$. Let some one else find it that will bring something to dig with. We all would hate it if you go back their and find something that we would have to read about. :detecting: ... KEN

Are you back yet? We all want to know what's in that hole!

I am going to dig the area around the tree on a weekend when I have some free time. Since it is on my own property, I don't have to worry about someone else finding it. I will take a crow bar, sledge, and pick and shovel and try to get the rocks moved without damaging the tree. I will post what I find, but I would not be surprised if it was some old copper pipe, piece of farm equipment, or other junk. Yeah, but I must find out anyway.

This is going to turn into a story. I can see it now... KEN

Finally moved the rock to find out what was under it, and it was a large piece of rusty iron. Could not get it out easily (probably covering gold bars!), but looked at the trouble it would take with the chance of reward and let it be. This afternoon I will spend a little time hunting an old field near my house. See what happens, but it is a beautiful day.
Andy form Hillsborough

As I said it was a beautiful day so went out and hunted a plowed corn field and around some old trees near a stream in Hillsborough, NC for about an hour. Didn't find anything exciting ( Remington- UMC shotgun shell, triangle piece of metal, an old gear, and pop top and part of a plow blade (not shown). Almost lost my propointer as I left it on the ground in the field--luckily I found it before the sun went down. Also, found a lot of large stones with iron in them that didn't DISC out. I had to reset the ground balance to get them to DIsc out.
